Caroline was sick and had chicken pox, it was offical. The school nurse had called her mother and told her that she needed to be picked up from school right away and taken to the doctors. Of course, there was always the question: How much of that did her mother hear and or understand? So, just in case her mother was coherant enough to come get her, Caroline waited in the courtyard.
But, she was never the type to sit there and stare out into space. Caroline pulled out her pad and watercolors that she usually kept handy. Then with the help of an abandoned bottle of water, Caroline started to paint a flower and a fairy resting on one of its petals.

Joanne had seen Caroline beat a somewhat hasty retreat to the courtyard and had decided to follow her. She pushed open the school doors and peeked out, looking for the girl she could almost call her girlfriend.
"Caroline?" Joanne asked, stepping onto the steps. "Are you alright?" she asked in concern. She hovered slightly, not wanting to intrude if she was not wanted. It looked as if Caroline was painting.

"Oh Joanne," Caroline jumped slightly not expecting her girlfriend to sneak up on her like that, "Hey. Yeah...I'm peachy. Well less than peachy really. Look," She held out her arm to show her the chicken pox. Then she turned down her collar to show her more spots that she found in the nurses office, "If you haven't had the chicken pox before I would back away. So, not so peachy really." She sighed turning back to her painting and adding purple wings onto the fairy.

Joanne approached slightly to see what Caroline was showing her. When she warned her to back away if she had never had them, she shook her head. "I had them when I was six. Oatmeal baths help, and if your mom puts socks on your hands to keep you from itching, they actually work really well to scratch with." She told her, watching as Caroline added wings to a fairy or pixie, Joanne couldn't be sure.
"That's really good." She told her warmly, motioning to the picture. "I wish I could draw or paint...mine looks like small children drew them." She grinned a little.

"Oatmeal baths?" Caroline asked, "Lots of baths. Lilly told me something about some lotion. An oatmeal bath sounds like more fun though. A jello bath would be awesome," She shrugged letting out a sigh. "Was it bad? When you were six? Well I guess everything was ten times worse when you were six..."
Caroline looked up at her and smiled, "Thanks. It's not gonna make it into any artshows anytime soon, but it's one of the few things I can draw." She laughed and shook her head, "I'm sure they don't look like small children would do. If you can draw a somewhat straight line and stay in the lines when you color, you're one up on them."

Joanne laughed when Caroline said a Jello bath would be awesome. "Yes I'm sure it would be, but oatmeal baths take the itch away for a little while at least." When she asked if it was bad when she had it, she shrugged. "It could have been worse. It wasn't a horrible case of it, but was severe enough to take me out of commission for about 3 weeks." She glanced at Caroline "I don't think you'll be out for that long though." She said eyeing the dots.
"Oh trust me," Joanne began when Caroline said she was sure her drawing didn't look like a small children drew it. My straight lines aren't very straight and a circle is a little to advanced for me." She laughed.

"Then I suppose I'll have to go for the oatmeal," Caroline said with a deep sigh, "Ah well. If it has to be it has to be. One day I'll get a jello bath. When I'm eighty and my grandkids have to listen to me or something." She chuckled to herself. "3 weeks? Joanne...I doubt you were out of comission as a six year old," She teased her girlfriend's colorful vocabulary.
Caroline giggled and waved her hand, "You'd get the hang of it. You probably just haven't had the right teacher. I had to teach myself some stuff. They really don't have pixies 101 in this school, so I had to make it up as I went. Maybe that's gotta be you and the elusive circle."

"You plan to tell your grandchildren of a jello bath?" Joanne asked stifling a laugh. When Caroline said she doubted she was out of commission at Six, Joanne rolled her eyes.
"Really?" Joanne asked, with a slightly sour face remembering the experience. "What would you call be locked in your room and to sick to get out of bed without help then?" She waved Caroline off, not unkindly, when she said she'd get the hang of drawing.
"I took classes when I was younger, but the techniques never quite clicked with me. I just don't have an artist mind set I suppose."

"Maybe...probably," Caroline smirked. "I fully intend to be one of the oddest and strangest grandmas out there. Give my grandkids something to remember me by." She giggled to herself and once again felt the need to scratch at her arm.
"Hmmm...under house arrest?" She asked, "Out of comission might be too strong of a phrase for your normal average six year old to handle. Then again, I bet you weren't a normal average six year old." She nodded slowly imagining Joanne on one of those kid genius television shows.
"Oh ok," Caroline shrugged, "Well I'm not your average teacher. I might be able to get a circle out of you yet."

"Yes you'll be an interesting grandmother. However now comes the question of how will you have children let alone grandchildren?" She asked with a grin. When Caroline suggested under house arrest, she shook her head.
"No, that makes it sound like I did something to get myself in trouble." Joanne pointed out. She had been use to being unsupervised even at six, so it hadn't seemed like that big of a thing when she had gotten sick. She was left with a nanny, and her parents went on holiday.
"Oh a circle huh? Maybe we should start with something simpler. Like a square." She teased lightly.

Caroline thought about that for a moment and shrugged. "I'm not so worried about it. I'm sure I'll have kids somehow. Either I will...with a donor or a friend's 'donation'. Or the same for my future partner. Or adopt," She shrugged again, "It'll happen one way or another. I'll be sure to bug my kids about having kids too. Just so I can do the whole jello thing." She bit her lip as she scracted at her arm some more.
"That's true," Caroline nodded, "And that would kinda be mean. If they grounded you for being sick."
Caroline laughed, "Squares are actually harder then they look. I would stick to rectangles," She said winking at Joanne.

"Well at least you have it planed out." Joanne teased her gently, resisting the urge to swipe her hand from her arm. Scratching wasn't going to help, but she wasn't her mother, and she wasn't going to lecture her.
"I wouldn't be surprised if my parents wanted to." Joanne muttered darkly. "My parents left me with a nanny and went on holiday." She pushed her hair back off her shoulders.
"Well Rectangles aren't as nicely done as I would like either. I'm just not artistic. It would be nice to be, but it's just not in me I'm afraid, but I can whip up an argument for debate pretty quick." She said with a mild laugh.

"Yep," Caroline smirked. "Well partially. I have to find that soul mate, but I got some time...to you know. Investigate," She said her wicked smirk turning into a genuine smile. A soft one maybe suspecting that Joanne could be that person, but maybe not. Not everyone ended up with thier high school sweetheart. If that's what they were.
"That's no fair!" Caroline pouted, "They should have taken you with them!"
"Well there you go then. I'll leave the debating to you and you leave the drawing to me. Sounds like a good partnership," She winked at Joanne before adding small little green shoes to her fairy.

"Yes, well there's a time and a place for everything, and it's called college." Joanne teased her gently. She grinned glancing out over the parking lot. Was someone coming to get Caroline? How long had she been sitting out there?
"Ah, well they decided I was sick, and should stay in bed, but they shouldn't have to be punished because I couldn't stay well." Joanne told her flatly. "My mother's words, how loving yes?"
"Yes you can draw, and I can argue. I can argue about how well you draw, it's fool proof." Joanne said with folded arms.

Caroline smirked, "Exactly. I can't wait til I get there. Hopefully I will. I don't want to leave Jonas though. I'll have to do some soul searching next year," She admitted. Then she looked up at Joanne, "Have you done the whole college thing yet?"
"Wow, remind me to kick them when I meet them. Not really a good first impression, but I'm just fine with that," Caroline said with a wrinkled nose. That was insane, for anyone to say that to their daughter.
Caroline laughed and clapped her hands, "Perfect. I like the way you think."
