Penny groaned as the bell rang just as she finally managed to open her new locker. She was rather tempted to stamp her foot and whine like a four year old, but she couldn't get rid of her parents' voices in her head. She grabbed her books and slammed the locker door.
Penny tried to keep her hair in place as she rushed across the halls. Bad enough she was going to be late; messy hair would just make the discussion over tardiness that was soon to come even more unbearable. Of course, in all her careful planning, her shoes remained untied.
The next thing she knew, her face was on the ground and she felt a horrible headache coming on. All the while, she was thinking, God, I hate high school already...

Kyle took at least a good four steps backwards. In his haste to get to class, he nearly tripped over a small girl's untied shoelace as he passed by her, watching her fall instead. "I'm sorry," he said quietly, taking her hand and helping her up. He handed her her books with his other hand. "Here. I think these are yours."
Kyle glanced up to the clock, a look of confusion crossing his face. He'd not yet figured out how to raise an eyebrow. He'd keep working at it. "Why were you going so fast? There are still four minutes in passing time. Fall and all."

Penny blinked slightly as she was suddenly helped up. It took her a good five minutes to even respond, since she was internally groaning from the headache. "Thanks..." she whispered dumbly, smiling widely as she took her books.
She glanced down as he asked her why she was in a hurry. "Oh...darn it!" This time she did stamp her foot. "I still haven't figured out how this bell system works." She sighed. "I want junior high back!"

Kyle's confusion grew. "Don't we all....I'm pretty sure you still have class. And I'm pretty sure I still have class. No study hall until next semester. I'm just around the corner, though, so it's not a big deal. Bells are pretty easy. When you hear a bell, move. That's the general theory, anyway."

Penny rolled her eyes. "Yeah, yeah, I know. But trust me, I didn't even have to be here yet. I'm only thirteen for God's sake!" She blinked a bit. "Not that you needed to know that. Sorry." She bit her lip, glancing down. "Umm...I'd probably better go..." She groaned again as her head started pounding.

Kyle shrugged. "Yeah, go..." She was the only person in the freshman class he'd met who had skipped ahead. Most of the freshman he'd met were pretty dumb. He'd heard the other upperclassmen talking about it a few times. He watched her take off down the hallway, turning into the doorway of his class.

Penny looked back and sent him a smile. He had been pretty nice to her. She stopped for a minute, biting her lip. "Hey...what's your name? I might as well know to whom I should be grateful toward for helping out a lowly freshman" she pointed out jokingly. No headache could stop her sense of humor.

"Oh. Kyle Winters. I'll see you around, I guess," he answered, nodding. "It's not a big deal. This seniority stuff is a bunch of crap, if you ask me. Freshman aren't any less lowly than juniors, at least in my book."

Penny grinned widely. "You're a junior? Maybe you know my cousin; April Ericcson? I'm Penny." She then realized the time. "Oh! Duh! Why am I not leaving yet?" She bit her lip slightly before waving. Now was the time to run. "Bye!"
[Out-Not sure at the moment. I'll figure it out.]

Kyle laughed quietly to himself. "Yeah, I know her," he answered, to now nobody in particular. He entered his classroom after staring down the hallway after her for a moment. She was a little strange. But then again...she did actually talk to him. Perhaps that just added to her strangeness.
