Lilia looked around the parking lot, searching through the maze of cars for a black Cavalier. She spotted it and hurried over, excited about the prospect of spending more time with her new friend. She leaned casually against the passenger door of the car, as though she'd been there for quite some time.
Thankfully, her locker had been compliant later in the day, and most of her books were now stored inside it.
Lilia smiled as she saw Eric approaching. "I was starting to wonder if you'd forgotten."

Eric walked out of the school, heading straight for his car. He was looking forward to spending the afternoon with Lilia. As he approached, he noticed her leaning against his car and mentally kicked himself for keeping her waiting.
"Hey," he greeted her, moving quickly to unlock and open the door for her. "Sorry I'm late. Apparently computer teachers don't believe in keeping to a schedule. He wouldn't let us go at the bell."

Lilia smiled. "I was only teasing. I just got here myself," Lilia replied. She climbed into the car, pleasantly surprised at what a gentleman Eric was turning out to be. She waited until he was in the car before speaking. "So, what have you got planned for this afternoon?" she asked, curious. She was a little unsure about spending her afternoon in a car with a guy she'd just met. She could just imagine how Roland would react if he found out.

Moving around to the driver's side of the car, Eric got in and started the car. "Well, do we need to pick up your brother first?" he asked. "After that, I thought we could hit the mall, then maybe head to the Santa Fe Café for dinner." he paused, thinking of what else there was to do. "There's not much beyond that, but if you're up for a walk, there's this really nice spot where you can check out the sunset. The view is amazing." He stopped, suddenly feeling a bit silly. There really wasn't much to see in this town. The mall? He scolded himself for making such a stupid suggestion.

"Yeah, I need to get Dylan home before we do anything else," Lilia replied. She listened to Eric's suggestions. "That all sounds great. But I'd better change when we get to my house if we're still going running later," Lilia said, smiling. She glanced out the window as the car pulled out of the parking spot and they started towards the elementary school.

Eric pulled out of the parking lot and turned toward the elementary school. "Okay," he said, smiling at her. Hesitating for just a moment, he decided to go ahead and voice the thought that had been running through his head all day. "You're really pretty, you know," he said, hoping he didn't sound too stupid or scare her off.

Lilia raised an eyebrow at Eric's comment. The last time she'd heard that comment, it had been coming from her mother's boyfriend... and had turned into something highly unpleasant. She waited for a moment, and then realized that he seemed almost nervous about her reaction. She smiled at him and pushed back her hair. "Thanks," she replied. She wanted to add something else, but she stopped herself. That would sound stupid, she thought. Although I really want to tell him how cute I think he is.
Instead of trying to create a conversation, Lilia decided to let Eric talk. She'd been acting like a very different person in math class; normally she never would have talked like that to anyone, especially not during a class. But something told her that Eric was going to be different. At least, she hoped he would be.

Eric smiled at her. She looked a little nervous and he didn't want to make her uncomfortable. "So what do you think of Scarsdale so far?" he asked. "There's not much to it, but it's nice. I've been here my whole life, so I know it like the back of my hand. Smitty's is the place to be if you like ice cream - they've got the best Rocky Road," He paused, wincing. He was rambling like a fool. There was something about Lilia. She wasn't like the other girls around town. He didn't know what it was, but it had turned him from suave player into bumbling idiot.

"It's okay, I guess. About like the town I'm from," Lilia replied. She looked out of the window, listening to him talk about ice cream. "I love Rocky Road," she said, smiling at him as he finished his little speech. It took a lot of self control to keep from telling him more, but she managed; she certainly didn't want Eric to think she was some kind of ditz.

Eric glanced over at her, glad he had decided to take her out this afternoon. "Well, we'll have to go get some a bit later," he suggested. "You know," he said, abruptly changing the subject, "Much as I like Scarsdale, I think I want to move to the city. Maybe right in Manhattan. It's always appealed to me, for some reason. Probably just because I've never been there. You ever been?"

"That sounds like a good idea. I haven't had any ice cream in a while," Lilia replied. She smiled at Eric's talking about New York.
"I've only been once or twice. I went to a really small school, and we had a few trips up to the city to see shows. But I've never really been anywhere but Broadway," Lilia replied. "I'd love to see more of the city... I doubt I'll get to go back, though." She sighed.

"Really?" he asked, astonished. "I get ice cream at least once a week. Even in winter." Real smooth, Eric, he scolded himself, you're talking about ice cream. Way to win her over.
Eric grinned. "Well, maybe we can go there one weekend." he suggested, before he could think better of it, "See the sights, take in the 'real' NYC and not just the-" he stopped himself abruptly as he realized what he said. "That was stupid of me to say," he said quietly, "Sorry, it's just... I really like you." He blushed furiously. What the hell was wrong with him? He couldn't control a single thing that was coming out of his mouth.

Lilia smiled at his comment about ice cream. He was really cute when he was flustered. Her smile faded when he began to talk about going into the city on a weekend... she knew that Roland would never let her get away with that if he found out. She was relieved when he stopped talking about it, but his next comment shocked her somewhat.
"I... I don't know what to say to that, Eric." She really had no idea what to think. She thought he was just being nice, but to know that he really felt something for her... it was confusing.

"You don't have to say anything," Eric said quietly, mortified beyond belief. "I'm just being stupid." He sighed before continuing, "You may find this hard to believe, but I'm usually charming and well-spoken," he joked, using the line he had heard from the mothers of so many of his previous girls.
Wanting more than anything to ease the tension that was surrounding him, Eric asked, "So I know you're a runner and that you're really good in school. What else do you like to do for fun?"

"Eric, I didn't mean it like that. I just... this is new for me. I've never had a guy tell me that before who didn't have an ulterior motive. Besides, we hardly know each other," Lilia said, trying to undo whatever damage she'd caused. She closed her eyes and sighed. "I like you, Eric. Really. I just don't know you that well yet." She sighed again and turned to look at him. "Please, don't hate me," she whispered.
Lilia smiled at his question, knowing that she obviously hadn't ruined everything between the two of them. "I'm not that good in school," she replied, smiling. "I like to read. I really haven't ever had time for much else. I had to watch Dylan a lot when we lived in Virginia, because my mom wasn't working at home then."
