How could he be smiling like that when he knew they were doomed!? Lilly had no idea. "I want you to stay," she whispered, but it came out loads more wobbly than she would have liked. Shit. Now he knows.

Dwayne glanced up. "And I want to stay too. I don't want to become one of those couples that get torn apart because the reality of college rears its ugly head." He blinked a bit as he realized that he just blurted that out. Not that blurting things out was an unusual occurence. He was just wondering it that was too much information.

He voiced it. So apparently they felt the same way. Lilly turned in her seat to face him. "Torn apart," she repeated. "Torn apart. So you admit that it happens. Happens frequently. Okay." She nodded. "Torn apart," she repeated (again), this time very quietly. The words near broke her heart.

Dwayne closed his eyes. "Baby, it's not going to happen. Not if I have anything to say about it." He put down the pen and turned completely toward her. He took her face in his hands before kissing her. "We're going to try to make this work" he whispered in her ear.

Lilly brought her hands to his shoulders and leaned her head on his chest, letting herself cry a little. "I know," she whispered. "I know. I just- the prospect of it- leaving...Never mind. You needed my help, and I'm just making this so, so hard, and if you want me to leave I completely understand, I can get up right now and I can- I can walk home, and- and...I'm just making this harder for you. And if you want to just go to UCLA and forget all about me that's fine too, because you need to do the best thing for you and I know I'm just making this worse and...oh, I should just go..."

Dwayne just held her in his arms, letting her cry. "Lilly, you're not making this worse, you're not making this worse," he whispered, kissing her lightly. "And I'm not going to just forget about you, okay?" He kissed her on the top of her head. "I care about you, all right? Just remember that. College isn't going to come between us."

Lilly barely heard him. She was still on a roll. Every little thing that was ever in her head decided to spill out of her mouth...and her eyes. "What if, God forbid, they don't take you and they have to ship you halfway around the globe? Or what if in two years the only college that'll take me is some...some peace corps trip in Africa and I get some disease and die? Then what's going to happen? And what if you go to some party or get into some...I don't know, drunk driving collision when I'm not there to die with you? Then what happens? I care about you! You're the first person I've ever cared near like this for...and now you're leaving? And there are going to be other girls there, other girls that will be prettier than me, and older than me, and that'll like you just as much as I do, and here's going to be me all by myself in the middle of nowhere with my brother- Oh wait! I won't even have my brother anymore because he's going to college too...." Her long rant subsided to a low whimper. "I'm so, so sorry."

Dwayne sighed softly. "Baby, calm down. Everything's going to be fine." He kissed her again, brushing some of her hair out of her face. "And don't apologize. You have nothing to apologize for. If anything, I should be thanking you. It's good we're getting all of this out now."

Lilly pulled her head off of his shoulder and looked at him for a moment. "Wow. I haven't been that upset about anything in years...and thanking me? I don't know what you'd thank me for. Look, you deserve whatever you would like best in the world, and I don't want to come in the way of that. If you want to take your camera to London and take pictures of Big Ben for the rest of your life, you go do that. Don't- don't let me get in the way of that. Do you promise me?"

Dwayne smiled weakly. At least she seemed a bit happier. "Okay...but I prefer New York City anyway. Besides, you're a huge part of what I'd like best in the world." He blinked and chuckled. "Wow, that sounded insane didn't it? It's been three days for God's sake..."

A tiny smile appeared on Lilly's face. "Me?" she asked him, a watery laugh escaping her mouth. "Little old me? You'd like me best in the world..." She reached up to him, a hand on his face. "And no, not insane. Beautiful, maybe, but not insane."

Dwayne smiled widely and kissed her lightly. "Wow, you two must be very good at multi tasking" a voice came from behind them. Dwayne's eyes widened before turning around to see his mother, leaning against the doorway and smirking.
Dwayne bit his lip. "Umm...yeah, I guess so." At least she seemed happy.

"Yeah," Lilly answered, sniffling a little. One could tell by her voice that she'd been crying for awhile. "We're working on a few things right now, you could say. And I think they're getting accomplished."

Annabelle smiled widely. Ah, young love. She crossed her arms. "Well, that's good. You've got to deal with emotions as well as academics, right?"
Dwayne just glanced at the ground. This was just plain embarassing. He loved his mother, but sometimes...he wasn't sure what it was. But it embarassed him.

Lilly pressed a finger to his lips softly, almost reading what he was thinking. "You just have to roll with the punches sometimes, you know? Tackle one thing at a time. I find that it works the best." She moved her finger off of his lips to take his hand again.
