"And I'll be home later tonight. I have a ride.....thanks, Mom. Yes, I'll call you." And with that, they pulled up in front of the house. Lilly smiled as she looked out the window. "I like it. It's less...well, it's less cookie-cutter than my house, if that makes sense. Except...no picture window. Might have to work on that one."

Dwayne chuckled weakly. "Thanks...I think." He sighed a bit as he climbed out of the car. "So much for me not having to think about school. At least you're here. You'll stop me from dying of boredom."

"Oh, come on," Lilly encouraged as she got out of the car. "It can't be that bad. Besides, how are you ever going to succeed at college if you can't write a few silly applications? I know you can do it." She leaned her head on his shoulder as she walked up next to him.

Dwayne rolled his eyes good naturedly. "It's not like I can't do it. I damn well could. It's just a bad day, but there's no saying no to my mother." He shook his head and wrapped an arm around her waist. "Well, better get in." He started leading her toward the door.

"Thank you," Lilly said, stepping through the doorway. "I like your house. It's nice and warm in here." She pushed off her shoes as to not track dirt everywhere. "Where to?"

"Dwayne, that you honey?"
Dwayne chuckled a bit. "Yeah Mom."
Adjusting her earring, Annabelle Mitchells arrived by the stairs. "Aha, the infamous Lillian Cohen I presume?"
Dwayne winced a bit. "Mom, don't embarrass her."

Lilly laughed. "Yep, that's me. And no, not embarrassing. Mrs. Mitchells, I'm guessing." She nodded as if she was kidding around. "As far as I know you don't keep any extra people in the attic. Or the basement."

Annabelle chuckled. "Ah, I like this girl for you." She shook Lilly's hand. "Anyway, we're very glad to have you here...well, I am anyway. My husband's out."
"He's been out a lot lately" Dwayne commented casually.
Annabelle bit her lip, but then shook her head. "Anyway kids, there are some pretzels if you need them. I know Dwayne's probably starving by now. So have fun."
"Mom? I'm filling out college applications," Dwayne reminded his mother, quite sure she had finally lost it.
"And that can't be fun? Come on, I let you have your girlfriend here." Annabelle winked. "Anyway, I'll be busy for a bit, so I'll leave you two alone." And with that she rushed up the stairs.
Dwayne chuckled, shaking his head. "Never a dull moment around here..."

"Strange mother. Think I like her." Lilly grinned. "So...what first? Pretzels...work...other things...? It's up to you, it's your house." She rocked back and forth on her heels.

Dwayne bit his lip as they walked into the kitchen. "I hate to say it, but I know for a fact if I don't get it done now, I'll never be able to stop myself from finding a million different excuses." He kissed her lightly on the forehead.

"All right," Lilly agreed, kissing his cheek. "What do you want me to do? Or rather, what do you want me to do first?" She glanced over to the table. "You've got a lot of papers over there, Dwayne. Like, a *lot* of papers."

Dwayne sighed as he settled down. "Don't I know it. Just...help me when I ask...make yourself comfortable..." He glanced toward her. "I really don't want to bore you or anything." He reached out and brushed some of her hair out of her face. "Just because I'm going to be miserable doesn't mean you have to be."

Lilly shot him a wide, toothy smile. "Of course it does. What do you need, baby? Let me help you." She reached out and ran a finger down his face. "Smile for me. Please?"

Dwayne sighed softly, letting a small smile emerge. "Just anything I ask help for." He picked up a small portion of the large stack of papers. "Well, at the very least they start it easy. My mind isn't so numb that I no longer remember my own name."

"Oh, come on. It isn't that hard. And your brain can't be numb, you were just talking to me. Keep going." Lilly looked over his papers. College. He was going to go to college. Wow. She picked up a packet from the corner of the table. "This one's for- this is for UCLA." That's like...a million miles away...
