"Conserves au vinaigre. Bien, correct, j'ai dit le mot secret. Est-ce que je peux entrer maintenant ?" Lilly waited impatiently outside the French door, tapping the wall furiously with her now leadless mechanical pencil. She hoped there would be *SOMEBODY* she knew in this class- they had bumped her ahead into advanced French after a week's worth of French 2.
[Translation: Pickle. Okay, okay, I said the secret word. May I come in now?]

Glancing at his watch, Benny trudged into the French classroom a full 10 minutes late. He didn't care, though, he was completely fluent in French and he didn't figure that missing 10 minutes of some stupid high school class was going to change that.
Moving past the teacher, he called out "Cornichons," over his shoulder. M. Henson always asked for the same secret word. Every. Single. Day. Benny could never understand this. If he was going to have a secret word, shouldn't he at least change it once in a while?
Dropping his bag on the floor, he took the only available seat. He didn't pay much attention to who he was sitting beside - he didn't feel like talking to anyone anyway. Benny sighed and took out his notebook. Looking at the blank sheets of paper, he thought about Tommy's note, and the knot that had been slowly loosening made itself at home in his stomach once again.
Maybe I should write Tommy a note, he thougt, Since I did such an awful job talking to him.

Lilly turned around from her seat, raising an eyebrow at Benny. "You were late!"

Benny looked up at the sound of a voice in front of him. Finally registering what she had said, he blinked. "Uh... yeah." he replied. Way to state the obvious, kid he thought.

"I know you!" Lilly noticed, brightening. "You're friends with my brother."

Benny blinked again, staring at the girl. She did look vaguely... "Oh!" he cried, receiving a glare from the teacher, who was trying to explain some stupid rule or another about conjugating verbs. "You're Mark's sister," he said, this time in a whisper, "Lillian, right?"

"That would be me," she agreed, nodding. "From what I've heard of you, though, it sounds like your football buddies would think you were gay or something for taking French. Romance language? For a football player?" Benny'd always seemed 'too cool' for things like advanced French.

Benny winced when he heard Lilly refer to him as gay. Inadvertently, he balled his hands into fists, not noticing that he was tearing the paper in his French book as he did so.
"Well they don't, okay?" he said sharply. "They don't." Suddenly realizing that he had no right to take out his frustrations on this girl - after all, she had no idea what he had just gone through - he softened his tone. "It's just something I have a knack for, and I figured it would be an easy credit."

Lilly shrugged. "Okay." She was a no-holds-barred type of person and wasn't afraid to say what was on her mind. "I mean, most of the football players are like that. I would know."

Benny grunted in response to her remark about the football players. Looking down at where he had begun to print "Tommy" on his page, he wondered briefly about how the team would react if Cathrine actually did spread the rumour. They wouldn't believe her would they? They wouldn't take her word over his?
Shaking his head, he tried to bring his focus back to the girl in front of him. "So what are you doing here?" He asked, a little too brightly, hoping to change the subject. "You're not a Senior."

"I'm good at French. I'm only taking two sophomore classes this year. The rest of my classes are advanced."

"Wow," he chuckled, "Good for you. What do you-" Benny was interrupted by M. Henson slapping a worksheet on his desk and saying, with all the exaggerated exasperation only a French teacher can posess; "Si vous allez parler, pouvez vous au moins parler en français?"
"Je m'excuse, M. Henson," Benny replied absently, looking over the piece of paper. When the teacher had moved on he looked back at Lilly and sighed. "I hate verbs."
[If you're going to talk, could you at least talk in French] [Sorry, M. Henson]

"Don't worry, me too." Lilly then heard Mr. Henson's French comment, and continued on talking to Benny. "Si nous devons... oui, je me suis appelé la mon partie équitable des noms par des joueurs de football. Je prends des maths, l'anglais, et des cours avançés d'art."
[ If we must...yes, I've been called my fair share of names by football players. I take advanced math, english, and art classes.]

Benny quickly thought back to the times he had passed by Lilly while with the guys from his team. Had he ever said anything to her? He wouldn't have... not to Mark's little sister. But what about the guys he was with? He couldn't remember.
"I know they can be jerks sometimes," he said, whispering so that the teacher wouldn't hear him and he wouldn't have to speak in French, "But if I had known they were bugging you, I'd have kicked their asses." He would have, too. Just as much as Benny couldn't stand girls like Cathrine doing the kinds of things they did, he couldn't stand jocks being jerks.

Lilly smiled. "Thank you...and don't worry, I would have too. I just didn't want to be late to class."
