Mark slammed the door shut. He was still fuming.
Lilly wouldn't speak to him and he didn't blame her.
"Lilly, I'm just trying to protect you. Why can't you see that?"

"Because you're being an ass about it? Look, Mark, I get it. But I'm happy, why aren't you happy for me? You're just jealous. I knew it. I knew you would be jealous of him. And of me." Lilly crossed her arms and put her feet on the dashboard.

Mark griped the steering wheel tighter.
"Lilly, you've known him for all of an hour. How can you be happy when you barely know him. I mean do you even know about his reputation? I just don't want you to be one of those girls, Lillian!"
Mark sighed and hoped that this wouldn't cause him to lose his sister.

Lilly sighed as well and leaned into the back of the seat. "Nobody's ever said those things to me, Mark," she said quietly, voice slightly sad sounding. "I liked hearing them. And his reputation doesn't matter to me. I don't know why, but it doesn't. It feels- it feels different. Not wrong. Mark, don't yell at me, it only makes it worse. It's bad enough that my brother doesn't approve of it, but it makes it even sadder when I realize my best friend in the world doesn't approve of it either. Let me at least try?"

Mark hated being like this to Lilly but it was a crush, that's all it was.
"Lilly, listen to me, ok. You know I love you right? You know that the only reason I'm acting like a complete ass is because I need to protect you from people like him. Lil, I've seen what he's done in the past, I mean everyone in my grade knows about it. You're too young.....god Lilly I'm sorry. I know you want me to supportive and if it were anyone else I would, but until he shows me he's changed, that he'd not going to hurt you. I can't approve."
He stopped at a red light and looked at Lilly. God she had that kicked puppy look that always broke his heart.
"Lilly," he sighed, "listen...if Dwayne shows me that he'll treat you right...maybe...and I stress maybe I'll be ok with it. But right now you have to respect my feelings."

"How can he do that? I know he should really be the one asking, but still...I'd like to give it a whirl..." Lilly tried to tune up her puppy eyes- maybe he'd go softer. "Please? He was just...so nice...and-and..." At this, she knew it was a lost cause. "Okay. I see where you're coming from. But please just try to be civil with him if he does want to- to continue this with me? I could see him never talking to me again after what you said. Be nice." She knew she was rambling, but she didn't care.

The red light finally turned green. Mark ran an exasperated hand over his face and through his hair, which spiked it out further.
"OK....how about this. There's the Homecoming dance coming soon, right? If he asks you too it and doesn't try to cop a field on you...I'll let you two have this little relationship of yours....BUT I'll be keeping a close eye and at the first sign he's going to hurt you, you'll really see how brotherly I can be...not to mention what will happen if I bring Roger in on the mix."

"Oh God, not Roger! Okay, well- I'll lay down the law as soon as he asks me. Because as of right now, I haven't been asked anywhere. Cool your jets." Lilly took her feet off of the dashboard, looking out the window. "Mark, turn right. Don't tell me you're so freaked you forgot where our house is."

Mark smiled, "Oh yes, Roger. You know you're just as much a sister to him as you are to me."
Lilly told him to turn right. He mumbled a curse under his breathe, this entire situation was not one to discuss when driving.
"Well, considering how chummy he was with you over an hour, I'm sure he'll ask you. And I promise I'll play nice...but that won't keep me from keeping an eye on you."

Lilly sighed. "Mark, you passed our house. And I assumed you'd probably be sleeping with one eye open, but I didn't assume that you'd come close to bitch-slapping him the moment you saw him. I can take care of myself. Look, I appreciate what you're doing...Mark! Turn the car around!"

Mark sighed, "I'll play nice I promise. It was just hard seeing you all lovey dovey with that guy...you're my little sister for god's sake!"
Lilly complained about his driving and Mark gritted his teeth, "Lilly, stop being a back seat driver, ok! I'm trying to find a place to turn around...I can't just do it in the middle of the road!"
Mark found a parking lot, turned around, and headed back in the right direction towards home.

"I'm not in the backseat; hence, I am not a backseat driver." They arrived back at the house, and Lilly already had her hand on the door handle. "Mark, stop and let me out. I'm calling April."

right Mark parked the car and sighed, "Fine. Go Lillian, I'm sure April has some interesting things to tell you."
Mark leaned his head in the steering wheel. Lilly wasn't supposed to be all grown up yet. She was just a sophomore. This definitely made for a interesting next few weeks.
