Lilia smiled. "Eric, they have to develop the x-rays. It's still going to be a little while before they know anything," she replied. She sat back down on the bed and sighed. "Besides, they're probably going to call the police as soon as they know for sure. If they haven't already."

Right. Of course they had to develop the x-rays. Nothing in real life was ever as quick as on TV. He sighed. More waiting.
"Yes, they probably will," he agreed. He had seen the look in each doctor's face as Lilia explained her story. "But at least that way we can keep Roland away from you." he said, knowing it probably wouldn't be of any comfort to her. She seemed to be far more concerned with her mother's happiness than her own.

Lilia sighed as they waited. She really just wanted to go home. Finally, the doctor came back into the room with the x-rays. She bit her lip and sighed as the doctor talked. It wasn't until he had left that she realized she hadn't heard a word he'd said. But the look on Eric's face told her everything.

Eric looked hopefully at the doctor when he returned. But once he began speaking, his heart sank. A fracture. A hairline fracture, whatever the hell that meant. The good news was that she wouldn't need a brace. The fracture was small enough that it could heal on his own. The bad news was that the doctor was obligated to call the police. Eric nodded. He had known they would.
After the doctor had left, Eric turned his attention back to Lilia. She had a blank look on her face. Had she heard anything the doctor said? "Lil?" he said quietly, Her reaction to his voice told him that she didn't know what the doctor had said. He took a deep breath, trying to explain it as simply as he could. "It's broken," he began, finding it hard to voice those words. "But it's just a small fracture. You won't need a brace or anything. It should heal on it's own in a week or so." There. That was the easy part. He tightened his hold on her before continuing. "But the doctor has gone to call the police. We can't leave until he comes back."

"I knew they would. Technically they had to as soon as I told them what happened," Lilia replied. "I don't want to have to tell it again. I just want them to get Dylan out of that house as quickly as possible. I don't want him there with Roland." She sighed. "I'm ready for this day to be over."

"Maybe they'll let me tell," Eric said, hopefully. He knew they wouldn't, though. He'd have to tell his own side, but he couldn't speak for Lilia, as much as he wanted to. He shook his head before Lilia could respond. "I know, I know. I can't."
Eric was silent for a moment, trying to figure out what to do. "I want you to stay with me. If you can." He said finally. "I don't want you going back there under any circumstances..." he trailed off, realizing he shouldn't be so demanding. Why was he feeling so protective of this girl he had only met the day before?

Lilia sighed. "I just hope they hurry. I want to get this over with," Lilia replied. She sighed.
She smiled at Eric's comment. "I can't, Eric. Once Roland's been arrested, I have to go back home. They aren't going to let me stay away once he's in jail. Besides, Mom and Dylan are going to need me. I'm not going to do anything to hurt my mom more than what I'm already doing."

Eric felt his anger rise again. He simply could not understand why Lilia was feeling guilty about this. "Lil," he began, calmly, not wanting her to sense his anger, "Whatever happens, it's not your fault. You're not doing this to hurt your mom. You can't think about it that way." He stopped himself there before his anger got the best of him. Taking a deep breath, he continued, "If you want to go back home, I'll support you. But you can always come back if you need to. I just want you to know that."

Lilia sensed that Eric was mad about something, but he didn't let on what. "Thank you," Lilia whispered. She closed her eyes and waited for the police to arrive.

When the police arrived, there was a flurry of activity. Eric was separated from Lilia and questioned. He tried to give the police as much information as possible, but he couldn't stop looking in the direction Lilia had gone, wishing he was there to help her through this. When the police were finished with him, Eric was sent to the waiting room. Drumming his fingers on the arm of his chair, he waited, less than patiently, for the cops to finish questioning Lilia.

Lilia wished that Eric could stay with her, but she knew that it wasn't possible. She answered the questions the police had for her and told them what Roland had done. It took forever before they finally let her go, warning her not to go back home yet. They'd gotten Eric's address so that they could find her if they needed to know anything else.
Lilia walked out into the waiting room and over to Eric.

Eric jumped up as soon as he saw Lilia. He moved quickly to her side and took her hands in his. "Did it go okay?" he asked, "What did they say? Are they picking up Roland?" Taking a deep breath, he stopped his barrage of questions. Hugging her briefly, he apologized, "I'm sorry. Sometimes I just say whatever pops into my head." he smiled at her.

Lilia smiled at him. He could act like a little boy some times, and it was kind of cute. Yet also kind of annoying. "Eric, it's okay. They're going to take care of it. I just can't go home for another couple of days or so. They said they'd keep me posted," Lilia replied. She sighed. "Let's just go, okay? I hate hospitals."

Eric nodded as she spoke, happy that she wouldn't be going back to her own house quite yet. He still didn't feel right about letting her go back, even if Roland wasn't there. Taking her hand, he began leading her out of the hospital. "Sure thing." He said, "I'm starting to hate them too! Do you want to go to school?" he asked, looking at his watch. "It's lunchtime, so we could still make fourth period. If you just want to go back to my place, that's cool, too."

Lilia thought for a moment. "I doubt they'd let us sign in this late. Let's just go back to your house," she said. She smiled. Being with Eric made her truly happy; she didn't feel the need to pretend or force a smile when she was around him. She could be herself.
