Welcome to RPG 101!
So you're new to rping huh? Never fear Collins is here to teach you how to rp. First thing is first we don't expect you to be perfect! Even the likes of me and Maureen makes mistakes at times...ok more me than Maureen. So no sweat just let us know you're a newbie and we'll be kind
Step 1: How to write a post
A good mind frame to have with rping is that you're writing a story. You use quotation marks and such as if you were writing a story. The only difference is that you are only writing from one character's point of view. In normal fiction (third person which is he, she, it), you are the narrator and control all of your characters. Here you control one.
For example, I play Collins therefore I can only write about what Collins is thinking, felling, doing, and saying. I can have Collins take a drink, start explaining his actual reality theory, think about Angel and how he feels for her. I can even have him kiss Angel. BUT I cannot say is Angel kissing him back. Because that would be another person's job. Therefore I cannot say what Angel is thinking or feeling as well. I'm just in control of Collins.
Another thing about rping is that there is a set standard. It's always third person (he, she, it, they). So you will NEVER use the word "I" unless it is in quotation marks.
Bad Example:
I dropped my keys on the floor.
Good Example:
Joanne dropped her keys on the floor.
Also everything should be in past tense. So -ed should often be an ending to your words. (If your verbs end in "s" then they aren't past tense)
Bad Example:
Joanne drops her keys on the floor and swears under her breath.
Good Example:
Joanne dropped her keys on the floor and swore under her breath.
Here's an overall good example of an rp. It is in third person and past tense. It also is just from Collins' point of view:
Collins wandered over to the sofa where Angel had plopped herself a few minutes ago. He took a sip of his water innocently and let his eyes wander over to Angel. She really is beautiful, he said to himself with a smile.
"You know you're gorgeous right?" He said to her quietly. Putting down his drink he leaned in and kissed her lips.
That's an example of a good rp post
Step 2: Entering and exiting posts
When you enter a post you simply enter as if you were entering the room. For instance, if Mark wants to start a post he can start by coming out of his bedroom yawning. Then you could explain how he had just woken up for those of us who are slow Another example would be to jump in with a thread that is already in motion. If Roger wants to jump in on an thread in which Angel and Mimi are talking at Angel's apartment, Roger will have to knock on the door. It's that simple.
Leaving a thread is also easy. It's the exact opposite, you're leaving a room or a area. For example: Mimi felt her stomach grumble and decided to head to the Life Cafe.
Then to make us all understand in case we didn't get it the first time you use brackets or parenthesis to tell us where you're going next. For example: (out-Life Cafe)
Just a reminder you can only be in one place at one time. So from the beginning of your posts we should be able to follow where you're going in sequence.
Step 3: Dealing with other people
As I said earlier you can only control your character. So what happens when you want to do something to someone else....well usually you can't. For instance, you cannot move another character unless you have permission from the person. It's a good idea if you are in a relationship with someone to give them the ok right away. For example, Mimi will probably want to allow Roger to move her. Maybe he will want to gather her up in his arms and lay her on the couch
Kissing and hugging and such is allowed. But as I said earlier just because you kiss someone doesn't mean that they will also get into it. Perhaps when Collins kisses Angel she wants to tease him so she backs away and flutters her eyelashes. So you cannot say that "Collins and Angel shared a long and passionate kiss." You can say "Collins leaned in for a long and passionate kiss". Remember always it's from your character's point of view only.
So what if you want to hit someone? Say Roger wants to punch Benny in the face. Here's what you can do, "Roger's anger reached its boiling point and he swung his fist at Benny's head." You can do Roger's actions only and you cannot say whether the punch makes contact or not. That's Benny's job. Perhaps he will duck just in time. That's his decision not Roger's.
Step 4: Knowing the Lingo
Canon: Characters who are from the musical/movie. Like Roger, Mimi, Joanne, etc.
Made-ups: New people who weren't in the movie/musical, pretty simple huh? I told ya!
Alright well that concludes our little RPG 101. The main thing about rping is to have fun! Don't over stress about things. If you aren't sure just ask! You can pm me or Maureen at anytime about anything including those silly questions that you know is downright stupid. Believe me, I have those all the time Happy RPING!
