"Ya," said Maureen, "That happened to a kid in my nieghborhood once. He was beaten by his dad for being gay, then finally kicked out."
Cathrine had to wince about. Beaten for being gay? What was the reason for that? When she wanted them to 'have sense knocked into them' she want it to happen litarly! She had to admit that was kinda mean...and by thier own parents! Weren't they supposed to love you no matter how freaky you may be?
"That's pretty mean," said Cathrine, "What's the reason for it? I've never really had that happen..."

Now Dwayne was pretty surprised. Cathrine seemed genuinely sorry to hear that. Maybe he wasn't being stupid with his optimism from before after all? Don't count your chickens before they hatch he reminded himself. "Because they can't accept it. People are raised to think certain things about these sort of things and when something comes in to defy that, it drives them crazy. So they try to get rid of what goes against everything they knew."

"But," said Cathrine, "It was his parents...shouldn't they just..I don't know, love them no matter what?" She started playing around with the hem of her dad's shirt out of nervousness. She didn't know what was going on. She assumed gays were just...teased, as someone is for wearing a bad shirt.
"Not always," said Maureen, "How do you not know this stuff happens?"
"I'm...shealtered?" she said, hoping that was a good enough reason.

Damn straight you are, Dwayne thought bitterly. "Well, you're lucky." His eyes were still slightly narrowed toward Cathrine. At least she hadn't done anything horrible so far. "And it's sad really...particularly all the stereotypes out there. The gay community really just consist of regular people...a lot of celebrities are gay, actually, and you wouldn't expect it." Damn, I'm sounding pretty persuasive, aren't I?

"I guess I am," she said with a weak smile...and suddenly she never realized how true those words were.
"Wait, celeberties are gay?" she asked with a raised eyebrow. But celeberties were so cool...how could they be? THe ones she admired were...gay? Wow.
"Ya.." said Maureen, and made a small pout, "And of course, they're all the hot guys."

Dwayne had to laugh at Maureen's comment. That was so typical of her. "Quite a few. And more are coming out, so that's a good sign. I guess they realize that their influence can lower the suicide rate." That should catch Cathrine's attention.

Cathrine gasped and looked at Dwayne in horror. "Suicide rates?" she asked
"Ya," said Maureen, "It's proven that gays have more suicide rates that others..."
"Really?" said Cathrine. Why did she have this yucky feeling inside her tummy of all the sudden?

"Mmhmm...because of struggling with figuring out your sexuality...the fact that society treats them horribly...violence, bullying, teasing, lack of acceptance..." He ticked each word off with his fingers. Now he knew he was being kind of lousy. Still, she had to see what she was doing with being ignorant. Maybe there'd be some impact on her.

"That's horrible," said Cathrine. If she played with the hem of her dad's shirt she'd rip the whole hem off...she just really didn't know what to think. She thought gays were just being whiny...to her they never deserved any more than just being teased. She bit her lips...but, now she figured out that there was more to it...it made her feel..a bit crappy, actually.
"Which it why we have these meetings in the first place!" said Maureen with nod, "Some people don't realize these things! Some think that gays just choose to be the way they are..." she shook her head in disgust at the thought.
"Ya," said Cathrine with a nercous giggle.

Dwayne was still watching Cathrine like a hawk, quite impressed that she seemed to feel so lousy. He was just surprised Maureen didn't notice. Perhaps he wasn't so naive to think there was hope after all. "And actually...looks like National Coming Out Day is coming up." He closed his planner. "So we can have it in support of safer schools for the gay community, because God knows this school needs it." He turned to Maureen. "Any suggestions, Miss Big Ideas?"

"Hey," said Maureen, "Why are you basically ripping your shirt up?" She crossed her arms..ok, this Apple girl was starting to act a bit suspiscous. She looked a bit..nervous.
"Have you ever even MEET a gay person?" she asked. If she had, most likely she'd know this.
Cathrine sat there nervously as soon as Maureen said that. Most likely Dwayne was going to say that she said she was a lesbian...which would make Maureen even more suspicious.

Dwayne couldn't help but be extremely thankful that Maureen was getting a clue. "Well, actually...she said she was a lesbian. Although I'm not sure...especially about who she says she is..." He folded his hands. "It's too bad if that's the case. The whole point of this club is to give people the right to be who they really are."

"Really?" said Maureen and giggled a bit, "Ok..I really don't think that's the case. You know," she said to Cathrine, "You don't have to pretend your gay to come to GSA...it's gay STRAIGHT allience..not the 'only gay people meeting,' I mean, Dwayne's straight."
Cathrine still sat there nervously and felt the urge to pull the hat she had on over her head. Suddenly, she had a feeling they were all gonna find out...but Maureen sure as hell wouldn't keep it a secret that the most popular girl in school was at a GSA meeting, and Dwayne...she glared at him, he was NOT going to win by proving she was not 'Apple,' but Cathrine.
"I don't have many gay friends like me," she said with a shurg.

Dwayne sighed a bit. What was he thinking? She was the still the same Cathrine. Same cowardly, eager to judge Cathrine. "Okay then..." He sighed a bit. "Anyway Maureen, any ideas on what we can do for National Coming Out Day? I figured I'd ask you first, since you tend to have big ideas in these cases." He crossed his legs a bit, glancing toward Cathrine. She wasn't going to change. Ever. What did he expect?

"Oh right!" said Maureen...damn Apple and her suspicousness made her froget Dwayne's questions, "We could make into a whole protest! We could have like...a Gay Pride parade! And, it could be prosteing homophobicness at the same time!" she said with a happy grin. That would be the best thing ever! "We could hold up signs, saying to let your voice be heard! We could have posters that spread the joy of coming out and showing your true self! We could have all the gay kids in school come and-" She glared at Cathrine, who was giggling slightly, "What's so funny?" she asked with a pout and crossed her arms.
"Sorry," said Cathrine, still giggling, "I mean, I heard you liked tp protest what you think is wrong...but...wow."
