Lilly laughed loudly as Angel checked to make sure he hadn't grown a chest in the past five minutes of their conversation. Sure, people stared, but who really cared? She didn't, and obviously Angel didn't either. She didn't even bother looking to April, who would have definitely brushed anything of the sort off within five seconds of seeing it. Good for Angel, she thought. If he really wanted to do this, then all the power in the world to him.
Lilly could only imagine what sort of trouble he had to go to to sneak around his house to try something as normal as makeup. Okay, so maybe it wasn't so normal for a guy to try on makeup. Or to buy it at the store in the first place. She wondered if the people at the drugstore had given him any grief for buying makeup. She hoped they didn't. Once and a while, she'd hear about Angel's family, and by the sounds of it, he'd be in some serious trouble if he ever got caught doing any of this. "Ang," she said, a little worried, "what are you gonna do if your dad finds out about this?"
Lilly laughed out loud at Angel's costume idea for Dwayne. "Oh, jeez...that would be interesting. Dwayne, a T-Bird! I should ask him about it. Something tells me, though, that he's gonna keep his costume a secret. He hasn't even mentioned the carnival to me. We haven't even talked about it. Not once. I wonder if he's not planning on going..." She gazed up at the ceiling as she considered this and tapped her jaw with her pencil. "But even if he's not planning on going, I'll go anyway. You and Tommy sound like you're going to be oodles of fun at the dance, whatever you're wearing. I'd have to go just to see what's being kept so secret!" Lilly turned to raise an eyebrow in April's direction. April doing anything even remotely girly? Who knew? "Correct me if I'm wrong, but you want to look girly...on purpose? And it's not a joke?"

April chuckled, totally understanding Angel's concern. "You will. They're completely your type," she insisted, still imagining those clothes. Which relative gave her all of that pink again? She wasn't sure, but there was a reason why she stopped sending thank you notes. Why thank someone for something you hate? She raised an eyebrow at Angel looking down her shirt and burst out laughing. At the stares he got, April responded with crossing her eyes briefly just to freak them out. They wanted to be jerks? They'd have to go through her and her utter weirdness.
She smiled weakly at Angel's comments on his clothes, or at least the boy's ones. She knew there was a reason why he always looked so small, aside from genetics just not serving him well. Not that she had any right to talk about being small. For someone who played sports all the time, she was pretty thin with just a little bit of muscle tone. Nothing very conspicuous and it didn't help that her mother always was all, "Sweetie, are you sure you aren't anorexic?" Really, her mother needed to stop being so overbearing and worried about her.
Noticing Angel's slightly worried expression upon talking about his dad, April felt tempted to hug Angel and storm the Schunard residence to give Angel's papi a piece of her mind. And possibly let him choke on it. But no, Angel needed to stay somewhere, didn't he? At Lilly's question, she frowned. "I don't know, but I'm not going to let Angel face it alone," she muttered, hardly realizing she was saying a single word out loud.
April's eyes lit up at the mental image of Angel's costume suggestion for Dwayne. "Aww, that'd be awesome! He'd look great and it'd work amazing with your costume!" She wasn't sure why she was so excited about this whole thing. Probably just her inner child squealing over the prospect of playing pretend for a day. Plus, the hundreds of possibilities of Angel's costumes were swimming through her mind and the sooner she knew what it was, the happier she'd be. "And Dwayne'll go. He likes going to these sorts of things. Lots of photo opportunities. He never tells anyone his costumes, so don't worry," she told Lilly, tapping her pencil on her cheek with thought.
April giggled at Angel's response to her comment about wearing girly clothes. "Hardly anyone has, actually...except for special occassions," she explained, beaming with pride as she glanced down at her jeans. No sequins, no embroidery, just classic blue denim with maybe a little bit of dirt on it. At Lilly's question, April shot a very subtle, but effective glare at her. "What, it's so impossible?"

"Good," Angel replied with a deep smile, trying to imagine what they might be like. Though really, who was he kidding? April could hold up a bag-lady costume and it would be his style. Because it would be for a female. With just a couple touches maybe and he'd love it. Hell, he had eyes on his drapes. Not that he knew the forst thing about sewing, he'd probably poke his eye out. But maybe one day he'd pull them down, staple them on. Right. He tried not to laugh out loud at the thought of himself wearing a drapes-dress, then showing his father. What a day that would be...maybe one day. In years and years and years. With Tommy holding his hand, too. At that thought, he drew a heart on the page, scratching in the right initials, TC. It was so unbelievably highschool he could puke. But what could he say? Suddenly he was very anxious for gym to start. There was still a bit of time to go though. He groaned.
"Who, me?" Angel raised his eyebrows at April's question. "Are you kidding? If anything I'm the opposite," he added with a laugh. There was too much good food out there. He'd be a house by the time he was twenty five if he wasn't careful. And everything he liked had to be the fattening stuff! Pasta, bread, chocolate. He was naturally thin but sometimes he wondered how that could be. "I just...walk alot I guess. And I've been trying alot harder at gym lately. I just can't think of why that would be," he added with a small smirk, tracing a bigger heart around the little one. So, so typically highschool. But they were in highschool, so he was allowed.
A bit of his smile disappeared at Lilly's question, and he didn't answer at first. Just sighed. That was...a loaded question. There was no telling what would happen. There was a chance, a very slim chance that his father would be amazing about it. Would embrace him and acknoledge that though he may not have agreed, Angel was his son. Or his daughter. Whatever he chose. That would be amazing...but the worst case and possibly most likely scenario was that he'd end up on his ass on the curb. In which case, he had no earthly clue what his next move would be. Move in with Mimi? Tommy? Caroline? Maybe even Lilly or April? That would be way too much to ask. Swallowing, he finally responded, "I have no idea. I'm just...hoping he won't. I don't care how that sounds, I may be chicken poop but at least I'll have a roof over my head. Maybe he doesn't have to find out...?" he asked weakly, his forehead creasing slightly. It was unlikely that woukd happen but...a girl could grasp at straws, couldn't...he. "It'll be okay...probably," he added quietly, hoping neither girl had heard. Though even if they did, it didn't really matter. He was a terrible liar anyway, and saying it would probably be okay was a whopper.
"It would be very cool," Angel nodded his head, though his own mind was slowly travelling back over to what his own boyfriend would wear. Hopefully they would match. If he was Snow White and Tommy was...a monster or something, that might be a little off. (He really wouldn't put it past Tommy to be a monster, either. Or some obscure person most people, including Angel, had never heard of, though of course they'd be very influential and important. Maybe if that was the case, they could just call him Prince Charming. That would work.) Though hey...if they were truly meant to be together they'd match without having to talk before hand. They'd just know. Halloween was Angel's favourite holiday, so it would hold the answer! And even if they were terribly, horribly, noticeably mix-matched, he was sure they were meant to be together anyway. Again, gym was taking forever!
"I'm excited then! You'll look so pretty!" Angel replied, getting peppy again as he tried to push thoughts of his father out of his mind. For the first time, it hit him how similar he and April were. All he wanted was to wear what she hated, and vice-versa. The only difference was, April was allowed to wear her jeans and her dark colours while he had to wear his skirt in private. Still though, suddenly he felt affection for April he hadn't felt before. It was nice. He loved both April and Lilly without end, but he had never really considered them best, best friends before. He hadn't considered most people that, aside from Mimi and Caroline too, considering she convinced him to try the drag in the first place. And Tommy, though he was much much more than a best friend. Now though, he was starting to feel like both girls were becoming more than just someone he talked to in math every so often. He liked it. Especially sicne before, he was too nervous to even talk to them. They really were both amazing though, and he was glad he finally cracked his shell. He was missing out on alot.

Lilly watched Angel write Tommy's initials in the corner of his paper, and felt an immense respect for him. Angel could be totally nonconformist and cliche at the same time, and not just anybody could pull that off. Almost immediately, she recognized the look on his face and his groan. She would bet good money that he was just anxious for gym to come around. Lucky Angel that he got a class with his boyfriend. She wished she had one with Dwayne. Lunch would have to do.
"Yeah, I'm that way too. Naturally thin." Lilly shrugged. "I guess it's that I don't mind vegetables that much. My only problem is that my favorite foods are pizza and chocolate, and that I don't get to eat them in excess. Sad, isn't it?" She laughed aloud when Angel mentioned gym class. "Oh gee, I wonder why on earth that could be?" Tapping her jaw in mock-thought, Lilly looked teasingly over at Angel. There was no way she was going to let that opportunity slide; it was as if Angel handed it to her on a big, shiny, silver platter.
Almost as soon as the question was out of her mouth, Lilly wished she hadn't asked it. At least not now. She would be so upset if it led to Angel crawling back into his shell! She was just getting to know him! Unfortunately for her, she'd already asked 'the big question', and now had to be prepared to face the consequences. "Well, even if he finds out, he can't do anything that bad, can he? He loves you, right? Unconditionally...or whatever." She half-smiled and hugged him (albeit a little awkwardly) from where she sat behind him at an attempt at comforting him. "Hey, and if it makes you feel any better, Dwayne and I have been dating for ages and my dad still doesn't know. Mom knows, but Dad would kill me if he found out. And also...well, nobody knows this yet, not even Mark, so you have to promise not to tell...anyway, Dwayne's been coming in through my bedroom window the past couple of nights. But nobody's allowed to know. SO shhh." It made her nervous just to say it out loud to someone, let alone two people.
"Well, I'm sure he'll look fantastic, no matter what he wears," Lilly agreed, cheeks turning a quite rosy shade of pink. "But if he wears one of those creepy Scream masks, I think I'm going to have to dump him," she said. "Those things totally freak me out. I'm not even kidding with you." Thinking about Dwayne's possible costumes made her think of what everybody else might be wearing. Halloween was awesome- it was playing dress-up at sixteen without the fear of being taunted.
Lilly stuck her tongue out at April's glare. "Yeah, it's impossible. I swear, some days you come in dressed in such a way that if it weren't for what curves you do have I'd think you were a long-haired guy. Seriously." But she had to admit it; April wouldn't look bad in a dress. "So you really are going in a dress?" It was nice to be able to talk about these things with someone- or someones. It was good to have friends. Even if they were just math class friends.

April glanced down at their doodles. "Diligent student" that she was, she loved just watching those two draw whatever they felt like on the math sheet. She was never really one for doodling unless it was a mechanism to ignore brats like Cathrine. Then she went absolutely crazy with doodling. "Aww," she murmured when Angel wrote Tommy's initials and put a heart around it. She really was a sap deep inside the girl who could easily pummel some of the meaner boys around here.
April giggled at Angel's response about working harder in gym. Hey, she'd work harder in any classes if Roger was in them. She just wasn't sure if working harder for her was possible without becoming overly obsessed with schoolwork. Plus, she didn't think that she would have caused a discussion on being naturally thin. Go figure. Her mother would probably want to stuff the two of them with as much food as she could.
April paled at Angel's reaction. While she totally understood Lilly asking this question, she really didn't like what happened as a result. The fact that Angel had to hide things from his parents reminded her of her own cousin. They both had to hide who they really were just to appease their parents who were too closed minded to love them no matter what. Her grip tightened on the pencil that was still on the pencil. Better the pencil than say, someone's head. "Angel, if anything happens, my door's always open," she muttered, not really trusting herself to not scream otherwise. She ignored Lilly's wishful thinking. They both knew that she was wrong.
She was glad that Lilly changed the subject over to Dwayne and Lilly. Honestly, those two had it lucky. At least their relationship was "socially acceptable" in most people's eyes. She smirked lightly when Lilly said that her dad was still clueless. "Ooh, you sneaky you girl, you..." she teased. Actually, she wasn't surprised. Dwayne did stuff like that that could sweep anyone off his feet. Thankfully he only did it when he really meant it. Then the subject moved onto his costume and April smirked. "You don't have to worry about the Scream mask thing. He hates horror movies. In his mind, they're so predictable simply for the reason that the characters are made to be stupid. Personally, that's what I like about them and besides, the people in Scream were smarter than the average horror movie character." She stopped herself before she went any further, because this was NOT about whether or not horror movie characters died due to stupidity.
April wasn't used to having people say how pretty she was going to look. "Aww, Angel. You're being even sweeter than usual. Thank you." It was times like this that she had to go down on her knees and thank Tommy for getting Angel out of her shell. She blinked at Lilly's response and her glare became more conspicuous. "Well thanks. But yes, I'm really wearing a dress."

"I think it may be because I want to improve my grades, you know?" Angel asked, fighting to remain totally serious. He wasn't doing a very good job. To be totally serious, his grades in Gym were probably even lower now, and they'd always been pretty low. It wasn't so much Gym he was concentrating on, as someone in his gym class. Three guesses who. "What can I say? I love learning."
"I hope so," Angel smiled softly, returning Lilly's hug as best he could. Maybe he was being too hard on his family. Yes, a few members had said some...questionable things regarding homosexuality. They were homophobic, okay. The only people he'd never heard talk that way were his sister and his abuela. But his family loved him. His father did, he had to. There was no mother in the picture, and if his father didn't love him it would've been so easy to give up. But he never did...so how would something like that change? He's always been gay, and it wouldn't change who he was. Wouldn't change him as a son. Why would a miniscule detail make his father change his mind about him? It wouldn't make sense.
Of course, the drag might be something a little less miniscule. That part...that part he would definitely have to leave out. Or at least, wait for a long time to tell his father. See how he reacted to the gay thing first. "Thank you. But...maybe I won't need it. You never know, right?" Angel asked hopefully, and inwardly chided himself. he was getting his hopes up. He was setting himself for them to come crashing down. But...it was such a nice though. being able to be who he was around his family. Introducing Tommy to them as more than just a project partner. Hey, maybe his father already suspected anyway? According to Tommy he had seemed a little...well, he seemed more interested in Tommy than if they were just lab partners. And after their date, his father had been interested in their project. More so than any other project he'd done before. And Angel would love for his family to know Tommy. How would they not get along? That seemed like just...a very good dream. Maybe...maybe it was a possibility.
That thought got Angel peppy again, and he couldn't help smiling. "Maybe it'll be okay," he said quietly. "To tell him I'm gay anyway. Maybe leave the drag stuff for another day, but..." he rose his eyebrows at the girls, like asking for their opinions. He'd thought so badly about his father. But maybe it would all be okay. Or maybe is world would come crashing down. But that was a pretty cynical way to think about it. It could be alright...so there was no real use in worrying. Right? Better to be optimistic and hope for the best. He did with everything else, why would this be any different? It could be okay...it could. "I'd love it if Tommy knew my father. I mean, he's probably got some bad opinions of him...thanks to me. But he's really not so bad, really..." he paused. "I'm getting ahead of myself."
"Hold up," Angel brow furrowed. "You don't think people will still wear those things, do you? Or more importantly, one of our boyfriends?" he asked with wide eyes. If Tommy did that...well, there were worse things. But Scream was so cheesy. And Angel wouldn't put it past Tommy at all. He wasn't always the coolest of people...which was completely part of his charm. Angel was attracted to dorks, it would seem. But some on...even he had more sense than that. Right? Tommy was cheesy, but usually only when it came to romance. That he knew of. Oh dear. "Actually...pause. I can very easily see Tommy doing that," he admitted. Well...even if Roger and Dwayne were cooler than Tommy, that was alright. He wouldn't trade him for either of them, or anyone else in the world. Unless of course he did the god awful "Wazzzuuup" along with the mask.
"It's a gift," Angel giggled. "Ooh April, can I do your makeup or something sometime? I promise I won't poke your eye out, I'm getting better!" he pleaded. He loved doing it to himself, he'd love to do April as well. he had a feeling he was more experienced than April with makeup, anyway. He didn't mean that in a smartalecky way, it was just the way it probably was. April barely ever wore makeup, not alot anyway. Angel spent hours every night experimenting. "And Lilly you can help too! It'd be fun," he was getting giggly again. Sometimes that happened when he drank his coffee too fast in the morning. The good part was it definitely made for some fun times in math...it just made him crash after school.

"Oh, yep. Grades. Definitely the most important thing. And Gym is the furthest thing from being a blow-off class, so trying hard will definitely do you some good." Lilly couldn't keep a straight face for that long, and bust out laughing. She was thanking God that something, anything, had taken the teacher, Miss Dale, out of the classroom for this long.
"I hope so too, for your sake," Lilly agreed, now feeling absolutely and positively terrible that she'd even asked the question in the first place. She knew Angel's family was uber-religious and would never, ever, ever tolerate him the way he was. Which was easily the worst thing a family could do to a kid, whoever it was. Plus, he really wouldn't have anyone to turn to, except his sister. And herself and April, if they continued to be best friends like this.
But wouldn't it be wonderful if he really got to share Tommy with everyone? She wasn't even dating Tommy and she could respect how fantastically awesome he seemed to be. She even had an idea that he was behind the whole 'animals on the football field' thing, and was totally behind it, 100%. Stick it to the Jackass Jocks! And the whole 'Angel dresses in drag' thing. Who cares? Freedom of speech, right? Let him go ahead and speak however he feels like speaking. "Let's just hope everybody goes for it as much as I do. You two are so very, very cute."
"I hope to God people don't wear those things anymore. I would just give Dwayne the silent treatment, I swear. 'No, Dwayne, I won't talk to you until you take that retarded rubber thing off your head.'" Lilly giggled. She knew her boyfriend, and she thought he had enough sense as to not wear one. They were ridiculous and disturbing and only meant for tacky costume shops.
Lilly smiled and nodded to Angel. "Sure, I'll definitely help you if you want it. That'll be so fun! APRIL MAKEOVER!" she half shrieked, attracting the attentions of many of the people in the room...including Miss Dale, who'd apparently shown up halfway through her statement. Lilly, who's face had gone an absolute beet red, returned to her desk and dropped her head down between the crease of the notebook.

April saw right through Angel and Lilly's little facade on school being the most important thing and let out an appreciative laugh. Of course she thought that education was important, but there were other important things out there. For example, socializing when the teacher was away. Or should she say cat's away? This just proved that she spent too much time with her father as a kid. He'd always say stuff like that and now it was leaking into her brain.
"Ditto..." April muttered, not sounding all that convincing. She'd love to think that Angel's family would love him (or her) no matter what. But she knew better, that they'd probably kick poor Angel out to stand in the rain without a jacket or umbrella. Except April would serve as part of it, and she was sure Lilly and Tommy would as well. She wanted to be optimistic for Angel's sake, but that was damn near impossible.
Then Angel suggested going in baby steps. Letting out a sigh, April nodded. "Yeah...yeah, that might work." Sad part was that she could hear Dwayne's voice in her head calling her a liar. It sucked being that close to someone who was too honest to even seem human. At least they weren't dating anymore. At the time of the breakup, April was crushed. Now she was relieved, partly because of Roger and partly because if she had to see him glare at her for lying, she was going to explode.
Then the conversation went back to the Scream masks. "Guys, you can relax. I know Roger won't and I know Dwayne won't. Tommy...well, I'm not sure, so you're on your own Angel," she responded, smirking to let the poor boy know that she was kidding. She giggled at Lilly's prepared reaction. "Again, he won't do that to you, or anyone else for that matter. Have a little faith in your boyfriend, will ya?"
Then Angel suggested to do her makeup. April's expression softened. "Aww, you want to? I'm not sure how much material you'll have to work with but...okay, sure. Thanks." After all, she wanted to look as pretty as she could for Roger on Halloween. "And I don't care if you poke my eye out, I'm just so happy that you're going to do that." The smile on her face was wide and it was clear she meant every word.
Then Lilly decided to announce it to the world, including Miss Dale. God, how'd that woman slip back in so fast?! April asked, trying hard to not let her surprise show on her face as she brought her concentration back to her notebook. "And that's why you don't scream anything involving the word makeover," she hissed to her friend.

"Well, I've been trying to work up the muscles that would make my family so proud. Maybe go out for the football team," Angel added with a smirk. He'd rather go out with the football team than for it. Maybe just with a certain ex-member.
"Thanks, but...it'll be okay. Really," Angel replied, with more confidence than he had before. Maybe it really would be. His family loved him. How could something as little as sexual preference change that? So he had a boyfriend instead of a girlfriend. Was it really any big shocker anyway? It wasn't like he was some macho man, he just pretended he had no interest in anybody. How could something so little change something so big? "Thanks Lilly," he replied, unable to stop from blushing. Gym was only...ten minutes away...he'd survive. He wouldn't burst. He'd make it...hopefully...
"I have no faith in my boyfriend in that field. He will embarrass me. And I will love it," Angel added with a grin. Actually, he was almost hoping Tommy would do something like that. Maybe get some of the attention off him. And if anything could ease some tension off a boy in drag, Tommy would think of it. He'd do something to make Angel laugh, he'd act like a dork and everything would be better.
"This'll be fun then! The three of us. And we'll be the prettiest girls at the whole thing," he said a little too loudly. That got them some stares, which he tried to shrug off. So Angel was gay. If that came to a surprise to anybody, he'd have to ask them which rock they were under during homecoming. They didn't talk to many people, but really...two boys practically attatched at the mouth was a little hard to miss at a highschool dance. Plus, Cathrine would have the rumour spread as far as it would go by that point. A little bit of upset flared up in him at that...he hadn't considered it. But Cathrine was most likely saying god knew what about them behind their backs, to anyone.
He had no real problem with people knowing he was gay, not anymore. Npt now that he had Tommy. But what he had a problem with was people believing things about them that weren't true, that came out of Cathrine's wonked up head. That got under his skin, though he tried his best not to show that on his face. It wasn't an urgent problem...no real reason for it to trouble him. Right?
He was broken from his thoughts as Miss Dale came back in. He'd almost forgotten he was even in a math class, and he tried to shove thoughts of Cathrine out of his mind. After all they'd done for her too, they'd tried to make her feel better. But that was just thre way she worked, he supposed...she didn't quite get it. Angel sighed, he wasn't doing a very good job of pushing the thoughts out of his mind.
Miss Dale gave Lilly a weird look, then looked at the clock. "Sorry about that guys. This is a really, really crazy day..." she trailed off, shaking her head. "You can start packing up now, it's almost time for third."

Lilly, thoroughly embarrassed that she'd been the one squealing amidst the quiet, turned a vibrant shade of pink and refused to say any more (at least for the time being.) Besides, it wouldn't matter much- it was the end of class anyway, and they all had to start packing up to leave. She grabbed her binders and her notebook and jammed them into their backpack as it was quite an effort anymore to get her things to fit in there. "She's right," Lilly mumbled. "This will be a crazy day." The full on nausea and headache from earlier set in again as she no longer had anyone to talk to to keep her mind off of it, and she felt sicker than ever. "I'll see you guys later." Now all she could do was wait for the bell.
