"That's true. Slavery, women not voting, who knows...maybe we'd still be out of America. People gotta learn to speak up..." Tommy paused realizing that he too had to speak up. He still had to tell Roger, Mark, and Maureen. All he knew was that he wasn't going to be so nervous as he was with Benny. It was gonna be a take it or leave it. At least, that's what he told himself.
"Really?" Tommy asked with a deep smile. "Well I'm flattered. And I'm glad it didn't take a month. You should speak out too...it's not like you don't have anything intelligent to say..." He was reminded of Catherine and her possible rumor spreading. With a sigh he added. "Maybe if the smart quiet people spoke up and the dumb people shut up life would be easier...not that I'm putting that all on your shoulders or anything...just saying."

"Yeah, but..." Angel trailed off. He had a reason for why it took so long to open up...but at the moment, it hardly seemed sufficient. More stupid than anything else. Tommy would probably find it stupid. "I don't know. Just always been shy, I guess...you're right though. Some people aren't shy enough."

Tommy looked over at Angel and frowned deeply. "Oh I'm sorry...I mean you can be quiet all you want. I don't mean to be imposing. Sorry...it just seems like..." He shrugged before he could put his foot in his mouth any farther. "Sorry. I don't know what it is like to walk in your shoes...so I shouldn't say anything. Sorry." He gulped wondering if this day was just out to get him. It seemed like Angel might be one of the few positive things that resulted in this day. But here he was...ruining that.

"Why are you apologizing? You didn't do anything," Angel told him quickly. He was tempted to touch Tommy's arm, or something but...he didn't. Not quite yet. "I mean, I gues it's sort of because...it's stupid," he sighed, frustrated with himself for not being able to just spit it out. Spit what out? What am I gonna tell him, I don't talk because I don't want people to find out I'm...not...entirely straight? He wasn't quite ready to say 'gay' yet. Maybe...it just didn't seem right. He'd never felt for a girl like he had for a boy, so gay would be the natural conclusion...but for some reason...it just didn't quite fit. But whatever it was...could he tell Tommy? As trustworthy as he seemed, if somehow it got out...he just didn't want to think about the consequences. If Tommy was gonna find out, it certainly wasn't gonna be in the middle of gym class where anyone could hear. "It's just a stupid reason. But I'm not mad," Angel assured the senior.

"Oh good..." Tommy said with a sigh of relief. "I'm sure it's not stupid. If it effects you that much it can't be. But I'm glad. I was thinking that that would be just one more shitty thing that happened to me today." He paused and then shrugged. "Not that I'm complaining...just one of those days you know. Like the worst day of your life almost...but...well since this class at least." Did I really just say that? Well one thing's for sure, Angel probably won't be suprised when he hears Catherine's little rumor.

"Yeah I know that type...but if it makes you feel better, it's already third period. How much worse can it get?" Angel asked, then bit the corner of his lip. "And if that jinxes you...sorry," he laughed.
Angel's cheeks darkened again and he smiled at the floor. "Yeah...I always dread gym class, but this was...I liked this," his nose crinkled slightly in an even deeper smile.

As Benny hurried into the gym, he noticed that the class was still going. Not surprised he thought to himself. He had heard that Miss Loretti was a slave-driver, which is why he hadn't taken gym in the first place. Looking around, he spotted Tommy and another boy moving around the gym. The boy looked very familiar, but Benny couldn't quite place him. One of Mimi's friends? That had to be it.
Benny moved over to the bench, trying not to attract Miss Loretti's attention. He would wait there until Tommy was done, and then they could talk.

"That's true...most of the day is done with. And I don't think philosophy could be too hard on me...at least I hope not." Tommy laughed quietly. "Don't worry. I don't believe in jinxes." He looked over at Angel and couldn't help but feel...warm. "That's great to know. We should do partner running more often..." Am I gonna be brave? Why the hell not? "And maybe talk more often."
Tommy looked away trying to hide his slight blush when he saw Benny sitting down. He sighed to himself. So much for having a good time in Gym class. But he looked over at Angel again and everything seemed...less horrible.

Angel's eyes lit up, and he couldn't help but smile even harder at Tommy's suggestion. He couldn't remember the last time he'd smiled so much at one time, and syddenly all the energy he'd expended during the running came back to him at full force. "Yeah...you know, I'd like that," he stuttered a bit, nodding quickly, trying not to seem to eager and knowing he was failing miserably. And not caring in the least.
"Are you okay?" Angel followed Tommy's gaze to the bleachers, and raised an eyebrow. He recognized the boy immediately as Mimi's boyfriend and smiled towards him.

Benny had been watching Tommy's and the boy, hoping to get Tommy's attention. He knew that Tommy had seen him, but now his friend was studiously looking away from him. He knew this wasn't going to be easy, but he wasn't going to give up until Tommy forgave him.
He waved at the boy as he smiled at him, and was finally able to place him. Angel. Mimi's best friend. How could he have forgotten! He had heard rumours about Angel from the guys on his football team, and now, seeing him with Tommy, he began to wonder if maybe the rumours were true. Was Angel Tommy's... boyfriend?

Tommy's smile took over his face. "Great...great. Do you maybe wanna meet at Smitty's after school or something?" He offered. "I have a really big craving for ice cream all of a sudden. Cookies and cream. If you don't want to I understand and all...just offering." Am I actually asking him out? Well...it wouldn't be the worst thing...but what if he isn't even interested in guys. How do you even tell? You'd think I'd be built with an internal meter or something. Watching Angel he took a deep breath waiting for his answer.
"I'm all right," Tommy added. "I had a fight with my friend, Benny, this morning...and I'm not looking forward to the fall out."

Angel's eyes widened a bit, his eyebrows raising. Was he...no, ithad to be just as friends, right? Had to be...though, the thought of Tommy actually asking him out...it wasn't an unwelcome one. At all. He'd never gone on a date, never been kissed, never been liked that he knew of...but he was taking it too far. Tommy wasn't...was he? He never said whether he was or wasn't. Angel lieked to think he could tell, but then again, he hadn't met any other gay boys, either... "I'd love to," he said with a smile. "Sure."
"Benny? He's my best friends boyfriend..." Angel trailed of, looking from the boy on the bleachers to Tommy. "What about? I'm sure it can't have been too bad, right? I mean, he obviously wants to talk to you about it..."

"Great," Tommy said nodding. "I'll meet you there ok? I think I got money...at least I hope so. Or else I can tell Smitty to put it on my tab." He chuckled nervously. Am I anywhere near ready for this? Should I even...what if he's not gay? Yeah that would be awkward. But it's just ice cream. Nothing is harmful in a dish or cone of ice cream right? God I hope so.
"Really?" Tommy asked slightly shocked. How did he not meet Angel before. Well, maybe if Benny was a better boyfriend... "I didn't know that you were Mimi's best friend. I know her vaguely through Benny. That's odd we never meet before." He cleared his throat and shrugged. "It was pretty damn bad. I told...I told him something. Something that I was worried he'd hate me for. I don't think he hates me...but he's definitly not warm and cuddly about it that's for sure."

Benny watched the two talking, shifting his weight anxiously on the bench. He really wanted to talk to Tommy, but he didn't know if he should while Angel was there. After a moment's thought, he decided to just go over and see what happened. Standing up quickly, he made his way over to where the two boys were standing.

"Yeah...you know Mimi? She never mentioned you..." he trailed off, listening to Tommy, his forehead wrinkling slightly. "Well...if he didn't care, he probably wouldn't be here...right?" Angel asked with a shrug, directing her attention towards Benny as he came over. He smiled pleasantly at the other senior, not really sure what to say. If he and Tommy were having a problem, the last thing he wanted to do was get in the way of that. They needed to talk.
