"Not according to my parents" she responded simply, acting as if she didn't notice how he seemed to be examining her. She flipped through the textbook, deciding to study again anyway. "I've done everything from tripping and spilling champagne everywhere to almost setting the place on fire." She glanced toward him. "I don't exactly make them proud to say the least. So I have to try to be a better daughter. You get that right?"

"Yeah, I get it. Not to say that I agree with it, but I get it." Kyle closed his book for a moment. "I think just the fact that I haven't dyed my hair blue and gotten a nose ring pleases my parents. Or run away. I think my sister topped out on the shock scale and nothing I do can really faze them."

Penny raised an eyebrow and laughed a bit. "Well, that's...wow." She shrugged a bit. "Well, as much as it's sweet, I don't think it's a matter of agreeing or disagreeing" she pointed out. She let her nail trace little circles on her textbook absently.

Kyle sat back in his chair and a brief look of confusion crossed his face. He'd never been called sweet before. Except by his mother, which was...different. "Eh, to each his own. Or her own, rather. Whatever."

Penny raised an eyebrow. "You're making it seem like I said the craziest thing in the world..." she remarked, narrowing her eyes. "You're being nice to me, especially considering the fact that we've had exactly two conversations. That tells me something and it's all good news." She smiled slightly.

Kyle laughed. "Well, you're certainly quick to judge. I'm usually a nice person. People don't see that." He messed with his hair again, the angles of it sticking up getting weirder and weirder.

"One of my many flaws" Penny muttered in response to his deduction on her personality. "One of the few my parents don't bother to acknowledge." She glanced up and smiled. "How could they not see that? You don't let them?"

"Nah, they just don't care. I mean other people. Not your parents. I'm sure your parents care. At least on some level. They have to." Kyle put the book back in his backpack, lifting the bag into his lap.

Penny smiled weakly. "I try to make sure they do. That's why I try to live up to what they expect me to be, you know?" Maybe now Kyle understood? At least to an extent? April always said she was crazy and her parents were crazy. But it was all she knew. What was she supposed to believe.

Kyle glanced up at her. She seemed as if she was lying. How could she be happy saying things like that? "Reexamine all that you have been told in school, or in church or in any book. Or by any parent. Dismiss whatever insults your soul," he quoted. Collecting quotes was one of Kyle's favorite hobbies. He found them quite useful at various occasions. ((Quote by Walt Whitman, with the exception of the 'by any parent' line. Kyle added that. ))

Penny glanced up with slight surprise. After thinking that over for a brief second, she responded "You added the parent thing" calmly. "But I get your point, I suppose. But it's not like they're trying to insult me." Although she was getting less and less sure about that argument.
((I knew it! Hehe. I heard the quote quite a few times and I was all "Way to go Kyle for modifying it to fit the situation." And don't worry; you'll get the rebellious Penny VERY soon.))

((I've got a quote site up whenever I'm RPing as Kyle It's makin me smarter)) "Yeah, I did. But hey- it's fitting, right?" Kyle pulled out his math text book. Any time he saw the cover, it reminded him that he was too stubborn to test out of classes. He shouldn't have been in junior math. But he was anyway. He rolled his eyes for a moment, opening it to the page he had to do for homework.

Penny shrugged a bit. "Maybe..." she responded softly. At least he didn't say she was crazy. She hated that. After a while, she found that she couldn't even concentrate on studying anymore. He was starting to make her reconsider a few things.

After a moment or so, Kyle noticed how distant she looked. He wondered if he should say something. He laid his pencil in the crease in his book and simply watched her. She made some of the most interesting facial expressions. "Earth to Penny?"

Penny blinked slightly and looked toward him. She bit her lip. "Sorry...I just got a lot on my mind. I think I should blame you, but I won't, because I feel no need to." She shrugged a bit, leaning back on her chair.
