"Seems like." Kyle gave her a brief once-over before realizing what he said. "Sorry, I- that's not- it is actually what I meant, but- it's probably not what you wanted to hear. I'm not very good at that. Which maybe you've figured out."

Penny bit her lip, smiling weakly. "I probably asked for that one." She glanced down. "I really seem like I should be completely depressed? That's upsetting." She looked back up, her eyes narrowed slightly.

Kyle realized that he'd most likely hurt her feelings. This particular fact made him shut up. He knew that if he said something else it would probably be worse. He took his book out of his bag again and opened it. "Forget I said anything."

Penny's face fell. "Oh no, don't feel bad. I need a reality check now and then..." She internally kicked herself. Stupid, stupid Penny! Can you not have a conversation with someone other than April and be nice?! "I really need to start taking them in a good way."

"Nah, it's all right. I should probably finish this book sometime anyway." Lame excuse, Winters. He knew it was bad, but he'd use it anyway. "Like I said, forget I said anything."

Penny bit her lip again before shifting in her seat and fixing her skirt. She folded her hands on her knees and glanced around. "I won't bother you" she said softly, looking out the window that was a few feet away. She knew that sometimes people just preferred to read over talking. Still, it was a little sad. She loved talking to people and somehow it was even better with Kyle.

"I thought I was bothering you," Kyle answered after looking up from his book momentarily. "But if that isn't the case...If that isn't the case, tell me. I'll...try to think before I say something."

Penny's eyes widened slightly as she looked back at him. "Why on earth would you think you were bothering me? And anyway, don't worry about it. I hardly ever think before I say anything. Unless I remember that I should just shut up before I get lectured." She shook her head as she realized she was missing the point. "Anyway, it'd be hypocritical to force you to do that."

"You wouldn't be forcing me." Kyle shook his head slowly. "It would be me deciding what to say to you. Which means, on the most basic level, that you would not be forcing me to do anything. And...well, you just gave me this look that read 'don't be mean'. So I shut up."

Penny nodded understandingly. "Actually, my expression was referring to you feeling like you had to apologize. I've heard worse from other people, I swear." She smiled gently, as if that would help in making him feel better. She hoped it did. Smiling was really April's thing, but she had to try.

A smile returned to Kyle's face as he saw Penny smile. It was just...it was sort of contagious. He couldn't help it. "Oh," was all he could think of to say. Was there really an answer to that?

Penny internally sighed of relief as he smile widened. "So, I'm guessing everything's okay now? You're totally guilt free?" She chuckled lightly. Somehow this was just way more fun at the moment. Maybe when there is awkward silence, when it's broken through, it's even more fun.

"Not entirely, but enough so." Kyle laughed as well. He liked her better when she was happy. Not that he didn't like her when she was sad, either. She was just more fun to be around. "Guilt-free for the moment."

"Oh good. I wouldn't want you to feel guilty all because of little old me. I'm not worth that" she insisted, shuffling her shoes. She suddenly was extremely grateful for forgetting to tie her shoes. For once her clumsiness suited her.

Kyle shrugged. "I don't know if I'd say that." Maybe he should trip people more often. Good seemed to come out of it this time. "Maybe you are."
