Penny bit the inside of her lip. "Thanks...I mean, that you think that..." She shrugged. "Don't mind me. I don't have people tell me that often unless I'm huddled in a corner to not bother my parents." She blinked. "Okay, I've really got to learn to keep that to myself, otherwise you'll feel sorry for me all the time."

"No, what you need to do is make it stop happening." Kyle looked up at her. "If it really makes you feel that way, just put a stop to it. Stick up for yourself, Penny. Before I have to do it for you."

Penny smiled weakly, twirling a bit of her hair nervously. "You wouldn't have to do that anyway. I don't want you to have to deal with the death glares. They're scary when they're disappointed. They'd probably make me not talk to you anymore..." She blinked. "Holy crap, I'm nuts. I actually listen to this crap. I'm nuts." She stood up, pacing for a moment.

"Penny, you're not nuts. You're just impressionable. Penny?" Kyle watched her stand and pace around. "Penny, are you all right?" It was all really sudden.

"All these years...I've labeled myself inadequate for these people" she said quietly, her blue eyes wide. "I've jumped through hoops only to have them put fire around it and call me a coward for not jumping through that." She finally glanced back toward Kyle. "Oh my God, April's been right! I'm not the one who's had something wrong with her." She sat down quickly and glanced toward Kyle's shocked expression. She bit her lip. "Sorry..."

Kyle wanted to calm her down, but he wasn't sure how. "Penny," he said softly, hesitance evident in his voice. "Penny, it's not your fault." He wanted her to smile again. It was oddly comforting.

Penny took a deep breath, smiling weakly. "I know...for the first time in my life I know." She glanced down, chuckling lightly. "You know that I would never wear this if I had anything to say about it?" She motioned at her turtleneck and knee length pleated skirt. "I mean..." She inhaled once more before smiling widely. "God, I'm actually thinking for myself. Call the news; make it eleven!"

There was that smile again. Kyle laughed light-heartedly. "Sounds like a plan. Mind if I call Guinness? They might be interested..."

((*giggles* I remember it. And Gabe's not even born to be freaked out by the cameras. Damn.)) Penny laughed as well. "Sure, why not?" Her smile widened a bit more. "Would you look at this? We're talking like old friends when we met less than six hours ago." She shook her head with an amused expression on her face.

Kyle shrugged. "Told you I was nice." He paused for a moment, trying to think of a quote for the occasion. "Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another: 'What! You, too? Thought I was the only one.'" He laughed. "That's C.S. Lewis. I wish I could come up with some of my own."

Penny laughed a bit. "I'm sure you could. Or at least you will eventually. Either way, I like hearing you quote people. It's sort of appealing. And of course I knew you were nice. I was the one who said it first, remember?" She laughed again, grinning genuinely.

It's...appealing? That's a first. "Hmmm...well, I've never heard it worded quite like that, Penny, but thank you. Hopefully I will. I'm looking forward to the day." Kyle smiled as well.

Penny internally cheered. Finally, she was the one who actually gave the compliment. She was glad to make him smile for a change. He had a nice smile, she noticed. "And I am as well" she agreed.

"I'll put it on your calendar as soon as I figure it out. I promise." Kyle leaned back into the cushion of the armchair, putting his book back in his bag again. He wouldn't need it, he decided. Not now.

Penny laughed a bit. "That'll be appreciated. I'll want to remember it. And I'll make sure to commemorate it someday, mark my words." She winked a bit, smirking lightly. She sort of felt an energy erupt inside of her that was never there. She almost felt like she was a horse finally let out of it's stable to run free on the fields.
