Lilia glanced across her music with a sigh. She should have known when she volunteered to play in the pit that she would end up playing the violin. Apparently some senior ALWAYS played the piano for school productions, which sucked for Lilia. She loved the piano.
Lilia pulled out her violin and began to tune it, wincing as she played a very sour note. This was the first time she'd actually opened the case since she'd moved to Scarsdale; she hadn't started taking lessons again, yet. She knew it was only a matter of time.

Caroline walked over to the pit and took a seat. She pratically dropped her trumpet case and sighed. "I wish that they could make better cases," She grumbled to no one in particular. Looking across the pit she smiled to see Lilia. "Hey. I didn't know that you played violin. That's pretty cool."
She leaned down and pulled out her trumpet. After a minute of inspection, she add some value oil which would surely stink up the room. Ah well, unless people wanted the keys to stick... Then she pulled out her mouthpiece and blew through it, then placing it on the trumpet.

Lilia smiled at Caroline. "Only because my mother makes me," she said, smiling. "I wanted to play the piano, but apparently one of the seniors always plays for the school shows." She sighed and continued tuning. "I hate this thing."

Caroline smirked. "I know how that is. My mother wanted me to play the flute. Not my style really," She brought the trumpet to her lips and played a shakey scale. Then she shrugged and dropped the trumpet to her lap. "Well you got next years show then. Just hope it's not something lacking in the piano. You'll be sure to get it then. And hey, this is an awesome show for anyone who plays the violin. Maybe even if you don't like it."
Caroline kicked her case under her chair and paged through her bookbag searching for the sheet music.

Lilia smiled. "Dislike isn't a strong enough word for how I feel about the violin. Hatred would be more appropriate," she replied. "I really hope so... I want to play the piano so badly. But I think that apparently I'm playing for the fiddler... I don't think she knows how to play."

Caroline nodded. "Patience. You'll get it. And hey, who knows what will happen. Maybe he or she will suddenly develop some freakish disease and we'll need a new piano person. And there you go," She said with a nod. "I'm not above sabatoge so if you have an idea let me know." She played another scale and when she finished she patted the bell of her horn.
"I've missed my trumpet. It's been a while since band," Caroline said absently.

Lilia couldn't help but laugh. "I would take you up on that offer... but that would be mean, and I wouldn't want to hurt anyone. But I am going to get a copy of the piano music, just in case," Lilia said, winking at her. She really liked Caroline as a person.
"Trumpet really wouldn't be my thing. Asthma sort of makes it hard to play any instruments that require breath support."

Caroline giggled and sat up in her chair. "Well, just let me know if you change your mind. Maybe when we're done with practices, you'll change your mind. " She crossed her ankles under the chair and flipped her trumpet around her finger.
"Ah yeah that could be a problem," Caroline nodded. "Frankly, it's not the best instrument out there. For one the smell of the valve oil is enough to make you wanna gag. Especially when your nose is up that close to it." She winked at her. "So no great loss."

"We'll see," Lilia said. She sighed and set her violin down in her lap. "I really wish this thing would just get smashed. Then I wouldn't ever have to play it again. My mom can't afford to buy me a new one; I only have this one because it was my grandfather's." She ran her finger along the side of it. "Then again, maybe it getting smashed wouldn't be a good thing."
"Valve oil? Ew. My cousin used to play, and she stank up the house with that crap the one time my mother let her practice at our house. After that, my mother told her she had to wait until she went home to practice."

"Wow...that's extreme. You must really hate it. My advice, if you hate it that much. Ask around see if anyone always wanted to play but never could afford it. Then pass it along. This thing," Caroline pointed to her trumpet. "I'm still working on paying it off." When she heard about the violin's signifigance she said, "Ok forget what I said earlier. Maybe you can...make a nice wall hanging with it or something."
Caroline laughed quietly and nodded. "Well I do understand why. It does reak. But hey, I like the instrument so I gotta live with the good and the bad."

"Instruments are entirely too expensive. Its ridiculous," Lilia replied. She looked down at her violin. "I don't even want to know how much this thing cost my grandfather." She sighed. "I personally don't ever want to see this thing again, but my mom would flip if I just quit."

"Yeah that's true. But then think about all the stuff that goes into making them. To make sure that they're the right pitch, look pretty, everything in the right place. If something is messed up, then your playing is gonna sound horrible. Sure, it's expensive, but you pay for what you get," Caroline said with a shrug.
"Yes...well parents are special like that...forcing you to live the life that they didn't. At least most parents...." Caroline added. Her's weren't exactly as...active.

"Yeah, I guess you're right," Lilia replied. She put the violin back up and began to play the beginning of their first piece. "It may sound good, but its such a pain to learn," she said. She continued to play for a moment before putting the instrument down, satisfied that it was finally in tune. "My mother played when she was a kid. She regrets that she quit as a teenager, and she doesn't want me to regret quitting. She doesn't understand that I regret wasting so much time on it."

"Have you talked to her about it?" Caroline asked her quietly. "I mean...some parents are actually...well have a good head on their shoulders. Maybe if you told her that you weren't so fond of it...oh do you have a sibling? Make them play it!" She nodded satisfied with that option. "Cept finish the show. Fiddler on the Roof without a fiddler would be a sad place to be."

"I've tried so many times. And Dylan can't sit still long enough to play," Lilia replied. "He's ADHD, and my mom doesn't want to medicate him any more than necessary."
"Don't worry, I'll keep it up until the end of the show. I've already comitted to it, and I'm not going to quit."
"So, how much longer to you think it'll be before they actually get this rehearsal started?" Lilia asked.
