"Its hard. Coming out, I mean. I know a lot of people had a real problem with me at first. But you find out who your real friends are, or if the people you thought were your friends really give a shit or not," Josh replied. He shrugged. "I didn't get as much crap as some people, mainly because I was playing football. The guys on the team either didn't care or chose not to believe it."
"Strength is a definite plus... provided you don't let it screw up your shots. You train too much and it'll throw you off," Josh replied.

"I don't really tell people unless they really want to know, of I think they need to know. Of course sometimes people find out and just spout it off. There was one girl who tried to get me kicked off the volleyball team because of it. She got booted instead, and had the biggest bitch fit I've ever seen." She said shaking her head.
"Oh yeah, I accidentally beamed a player on the opposing team when I first started working at Smitty's because I wasn't really working the other arm out any." She said with a laugh, shaking her head with a smile.

Josh shrugged. "Whatever works. I don't want to force it in people's faces, but I went to a small school. Everyone knew everyone else's business. You tell one person and you might as well have told the entire student body," he said, smiling. "But most people were pretty tolerant... for the South, anyway."
Josh smirked at Stevie's comment. "That must have been pretty funny. But it isn't like you could have helped it or anything."

"Is that where your from?" Stevie asked curiously. "The south?" She shrugged. "I don't see how it's anyone's business really. There's always going to be someone ignorant who wants to push their beliefs on you, and it hardly seems worth the hassle in the long run." Stevie said with a shrug. When he said it must have been funny when she beamed the opposing player she grinned.
"Well at the time, it was mortifying, I ducked under the net to see if she was ok, and ended up getting benched for the rest of the game since I had been deemed a hazard." She laughed again, shaking her head at the memory. "Needless to say, I began working out the other arm that same day."

"Virginia, to be exact. Not exactly from the Bible Belt, but still a pretty conservative place," Josh replied. "At least I didn't have anyone burning a cross on my front lawn or anything. A couple of times I found Bible verses stuffed in my locker, but that was about it."
Josh couldn't help but laugh. "A hazard? Hey, she should have had her eye on the ball. They can't blame it totally on you, because it was partially her own fault. If she had been paying attention she wouldn't have gotten hit."

"I hear Virginia is really pretty." Stevie commented. "The bible verses in your locker is ridiculous!" She shook her head. "I had a friend who was Jewish and some idiot kept leaving bibles on her desk, telling her that he thought she was a good person, but she was confused." She rolled her eyes. "She was to sweet to say anything, but that kid had a meeting with the locker when he made her cry."
"That's what I said, she should have been looking, but I was the one who hit her, so technically it was my fault."

"The part I lived in was pretty nice. We were up in the mountains, so it stayed pretty cool during the summer. And fall was pretty spectacular, with all of the leaves changing colors and everything." Josh shook his head when Stevie mentioned her friend. "That is completely out of line. I mean, its bad enough to do something like that to me, but to do it to a girl just because she's Jewish? That's way wrong," he replied.
"I have to say, that's a pretty sucky rule. It isn't like you could really help it, especially since you didn't know."

"Oh that sounds pretty." Stevie said when he told her about where he use to live. When he mentioned how out of line it was of that kid she nodded. "Yes, but apparently the school board didn't care so much about that, they did care that his face got slammed into the locker, though nobody saw anything." She said waving her hand somewhat dismissively.
"Yeah it is kinda sucky, but hey, it was only for one game, and we were already winning, so it wasn't that huge a deal. If we were losing I got yanked, the girls on the team might have fussed a bit." She said.

"It really was. I sort of wish I was back there a lot of the time. Don't get me wrong, Scarsdale's great, but it isn't home," he replied. He smiled at her. "Good idea, doing it when no one would see. I don't know if I would have had enough self control to wait that long."
"Well, at least your team still won. I know a lot of times people get pulled and it cost the team the game. Happened a few times when I was playing football, and the coaches nearly got thrown out of the game because of it."

"I understand." Stevie said when Josh said it just wasn't home. She offered him a smile, before shaking her head. "No, you misunderstand me, people saw, they just didn't say anything. I think a lot of people had tired of that twit." She shook her head.
"Yeah the team won. Once I got pulled and we lost and the girls almost mutinied! They apparently needed my spiking ability and the coach was on a power trip and thought I played to much. I thought some of the parents were gonna rip him apart. He only lasted a year."

Josh just nodded. Thinking too much about home was depressing. He smiled at Stevie's explanation and laughed. "Well then, he obviously deserved it. Then again, if he was doing that to her it makes you wonder if he was doing something like that to other people, too. I mean, once you're a jerk its kind of hard to change that pattern of behavior," Josh said, smiling.
"I can see why that coach didn't last too long. They think they know it all, but some times they just blind themselves to the realities of the game. I see his reasoning behind it, but you don't pull your best players unless you're winning the game already."

"I wouldn't doubt if he was." Stevie said after a moment. "I didn't get to much crap from people, but well, I guess people think I'm scary or something." She laughed shaking her head. "I just think it's because I'll tall. I was tall in Middle School and shot up to five ten Freshman year. I towered above most of the boys, and knew how to handle them, growing up with a brother and all." She shrugged. "He probably was being a jerk to others as well. Just a stupid jerk." She shook her head at the memory of that kid.
"Ah, he just wanted everyone to have play. Which is a good idea, and I'm all for that. However, if the game is on the line? You don't put in your kid because you want them to play in the game. I might not be one of our best players, but I'm one of the better spikers, due to height and all the years of ice cream scooping."

Josh shook his head. "It isn't right that he got away with doing that to her. But some people just don't realize how hurtful even something that stupid can be. And most of the people doing it don't even think about what they're doing at the time. They're blinded by their prejudice against anyone who is 'different.'" Josh shook his head and sighed. "You probably don't want me to get any further into this rant."
"I understand why, but some times you have to sacrifice one person for the team's good. And if the kid knows its their fault, can you imagine how much that would hurt? That can't be good for someone's self esteem."

"Exactly! Here's a little tidbit, a high school a few towns over, shut down their GSA club because they said it was teaching bad moral values. Mind you, this was a public school, yet they allowed the bible club to gallivant around shoving bibles in people desk and leaving religious propaganda on lockers. So much for church and state being separate huh?" She shook her head, grinding her teeth just a little bit.
"Yeah I hear that. Here's the thing, sometimes that one person who has to be sacrificed doesn't understand it's for the team. If I get yanked cause I'm playing like crap, well good, take me out before I screw it up for everyone! If I'm playing the best game of my life, don't yank me to put your kid in, then if your kid screws up, they feel like crap, and I have to comfort them even if I don't want to, cause it's in my nature, curse my caring ways!" She grumbled.

"That's discrimination... the kids could get the administration into some major hot water over that one," Josh replied. He shook his head. "Just because we aren't part of the mainstream doesn't mean that we're a problem. Too many people just don't understand that."
"Coaches just don't get it some times. But you just have to suck it up and deal with it, because talking back is just going to earn you laps," he said, shaking his head. "Who's supposd to be directing this rehearsal anyway? They're late." He glanced down at his watch as he spoke.
