"Yeah, I know. And my instructor got a little snippy with me and quit. So don't blame me, blame him. And don't worry! I told you, I won't wreck it. I have faster reflexes than that. So don't be all pissy with me. I know your ankle hurts. And I didn't say it was funny." Lilly checked her mirror briefly and turned. "I've never hit anything, and I've never gone any faster than sixty-seven. So chill."

Mark sighed and closed his eyes. When she mentioned going sixty-seven, he raised an eyebrow. "When did you go 67? You've never driven outside of the city limits, and the speed limit doesn't go above 40," Mark said. He shook his head and closed his eyes again. "On second thought, I don't really want to know. Because then Mom can't say I knew you were a speed demon when you get a ticket."

"It was a forty-five zone and nobody was there, so I figured-" Lilly paused to look out the window for cars- "so I figured I'd floor it. It was pretty fun, actually. And I got the dummy cop, so it was all good. So I told you anyway. It's really thrilling. Like sort of a roller coaster only it doesn't flip...hopefully." Lilly turned the car onto the next road. No tickets, and almost home.

"Hold it... why were you driving without someone else in the car? And you got pulled over? Lilly, what... nevermind, I'm not going to ask. I'll just pretend I didn't hear any of what you just told me," Mark replied. He looked out the window. They were almost to the house. "So, do you think Mom'll believe my story of how this happened? Its kinda out there, if you think about it."

"No! By the dummy cop I mean like when they put the mannequin in the car. And I was with my instructor. Nobody *else* was on the road. And he was being a total ass and I kinda wanted to piss him off. That was the other part of the story. That's partly why he quit. Anyway, we just tell her. Mom'll get it, dad'll get pissed that we're going to have to pay for one of us to go to the hospital again."

"You did that with Mr. Hansen in the car?! That's why he quit?" Mark asked, laughing. He had taken driving lessons from the same man, and even he had to admit the guy was a jerk. "That's priceless, Lil. I think you got revenge for the hell he put all three of us through with that." He sighed when she said their dad would get pissed. It was the truth. "Yeah," Mark said, going quiet. He really didn't like talking about their father.

"Yeah. Basically drove him nuts. He was like 'Oh, good Lord in Heaven please have mercy on my soul....and punish this child who has been driven to...' God, I don't even remember the rest. It was just crazy." Lilly glanced over to her brother, noticing his downfallen expression. "Oh, come on, Mark. Who even cares. Dad's gonna be an ass. That's just dad. It doesn't matter, 'kay?"

Mark laughed a little at Lilly's repetition of Mr. Hansen's speech. "He gave me the same one when I hit the squirrel." He sighed when she reminded him that their father was a jerk. "I'm just always afraid things are going to go back to the way they were. You know? If he snaps I don't know what will happen."

"He hasn't even been that bad lately, Mark. Really. Like just the other day I saw him and mom watching TV. But he's not gonna do anything too bad. I promise you." Lilly shifted uncomfortably in her seat. He won't snap as long as he doesn't find out about Dwayne... "Yeah. You have nothing to worry about. And you hit a squirrel? You killed a poor defenseless animal? Marky, I'm ashamed."

"You're right. I just can't help but worry that he's going to go back to his old ways. He's so unpredictable some times. Its scary," Mark replied. He smiled at her reaction to his revelation about the squirrel. "Hey, that wasn't my fault. It was a kamikaze squirrel. It ran at me."

Lilly sighed. "Well, there's nothing we can do about that. I encouraged counseling, and he rolled his eyes at me. So whatever, I guess." She laughed at his comment. "Kamikaze squirrel? Man, that's a shame. Taking himself down to get Hansen to yell at you. Now that's a real loss of a squirrel, seeing as Hansen would've yelled at you anyway."

"That seems to be his reaction to every suggestion. I'm starting to think that we would all be better off if they just got divorced," Mark replied. He sighed. "I hate living in that house with him. Even if he has changed, there's still always the memories of what he did. And not just to me, but to all of us. Seems like all of this family's problems are his fault, you know?" He looked out the window.

"Awww, Mark. Come on. All the problems?" And finally Lilly decided...if you can't beat em, join em. "And you know mom won't do that. She won't get a divorce. She's still convinced that he's gonna come around and, you know, ummm....love her again."

"I know I'm a pessimist about all of this, Lil. But I really don't hold out a lot of hope for the whole situation. They've made their bed, but we all have to lie in it," Mark replied. He sighed and closed his eyes as they arrived in the driveway. "I don't want to see him, Lil. Will you just go get Mom and tell her what happened? I probably shouldn't try to walk any more, anyway."

"Mark..." Lilly frowned as she put her hand on his shoulder. "Oh, come on, Mark. You can't hide from it. Get your ass in the house and I'll deal with dad, okay? He won't kick you when you're down. He'll kick you later."
