Josh walked up to the school and looked around. It seemed nice enough, for a high school anyway. He sighed and glanced down at his watch, realizing that it wouldn't be long before the bell would ring. The real question was how long he would have to wait on his cousin. Josh sighed and sat down on a bench to wait.

Stevie could not see over her pile of books. She had managed to get about four steps before everything came crashing down, including her own lanky self.
"Ow" She muttered, standing back up and stretching back to her five foot nine height. Sometimes she hated being so tall. Like when she fell. She began to scoop the books back up, some of which had scattered a good deal of distance from her.

Josh walked over and smiled at the girl who'd dropped her books. "Need some help?" he asked, bending down to assist her. Once everything was picked up, he started looking at some of the titles. "Interesting reading," he commented. Josh glanced over at the stack she was holding, which was still rather large. "Let me help you with those," he said, reaching to take the books from her.

"Oh thank!" Stevie said in relief when the boy began to help her. "I hope they didn't hit you. They didn't did they? I'm so sorry if they did!" Stevie blew her hair out of her face. She was having a bad day. First she got locked in the big heavy oak door supply closet in her building and missed first period, but then she was assigned a history paper that was half her grade and due in a month.
"I'm Stevie by the way." She said by way of introduction. "I'd shake your hand, but their kinda full." She laughed.

Josh smiled. "Don't worry, you didn't hit me. I'm guessing its been a long day for you, too," he said, motioning towards the large stack of books.
"I'm Josh," he replied. "Yeah, the books do make shaking hands a bit of a challenge. Germophobic tendencies not withstanding."

"Nice to meet you Josh, and yeah, it's been kind of a long day." Stevie said with a nod. It would have to do since her hands were fully. She didn't think she knew him, or had seen him around.
Stevie grinned pleasantly. "I don't think I've seen you here before, are you new?" She asked curiously. "You don't have to tell me or anything, just curious." She was glad she didn't have to go to work today. She would have been able to do her work, she was sure, but it was easier to work at home uninterrupted.

"I'm not technically a student. Well, not yet anyway. I'm supposed to start tomorrow, but I got bored and decided I would walk my cousin home," Josh replied. "But she'll probably be a while... Lils always is." He smiled and shook his head.

"Ah, the school isn't so bad." Stevie assured him. "Aside from homework, and a few of the students, not bad at all." She glanced at him before opening her big mouth. "Your tall." She told him before realizing what an absurd thing that was to say.
"I'm sorry that was dumb...it's just, that I'm five nine, and a lot of guys are shorter, and I'll shut up now cause I'm rambling." She said with a laugh.

"So pretty much like any other high school, I guess," he said. "They all have one or two real jerks. Just gotta learn how to either deal with them or beat their butts on the football field," he joked.
Josh couldn't help but laugh. "Really? I never noticed," he replied. "Well, you're pretty tall yourself. Basketball player?"

"Yeah pretty much. The middle school I went to was an all girls Catholic school, so to me, this isn't bad at all." She laughed. When he mentioned football she raised an eyebrow. "Football huh? What position do you play? My brother's a football nut." When he asked her if she played basketball, she shook her head.
"Nah, Volleyball and Track and Field." Stevie replied. "I'm can't shoot for crap really."

"Catholic school... sounds fun," Josh replied, hoping Stevie would catch the sarcasm in his voice. "I just moved here from Virginia, so just about anything's got to be an improvement."
"I mainly played quarterback. But I don't think I'm going to try playing here, since I'm coming in so late. Wouldn't be fair if I made the team and someone who'd practiced all summer got cut," Josh explained.
"Too bad you can't shoot. You've definitely got the height for basketball. But I guess that's an advantage in volleyball, too."

"Oh loads and loads" Stevie responded with the same amount of sarcasm and a laugh. "I would still be there, if the nun hadn't been so gun ho about discipline!" She shifted so he could see her arm. "That scar was made by a ruler. I was doodling in the margins of my notebook, and WHAM right in the arm. It wouldn't stop bleeding so I had to get stitches, and my brother was not pleased." She shrugged.
"Oh no? I don't think there's a whole lot going out with the football team here anyway." She said with a shrug. "Do you play any other sports?" She asked curiously. "And yeah, the height comes in handy when I'm spiking the ball, or trying to reach a top shelf." She said with a laugh.

Josh winced just thinking about having a ruler make a wound like that. "Ouch. Yeah, I've heard they're pretty strict, but I never would have imagined that," he replied. The thought sent shivers down his spine, mainly because it looked so similar to some of the ones he'd seen on Lilia's back.
"I actually played JV basketball. Football coach at my old school made me give it up when I started varsity. But I think I might go back to playing again here," Josh replied. He smiled. "Being tall does have its advantages. Especially when I'm trying to keep my cousins from getting something."

Stevie laughed. "My brother is taller than me, but not quite as tall as to keep something out of my reach. He's probably about six one or so...so a few inches." She shrugged and shifted her books before setting them down, and sitting down on the stairs.
"If you don't mind I'm just gonna sit here for a minute." She said with a laugh. "So you moved here with your family or to live with a relative?"

Josh sat down next to Stevie and smiled. "No problem. I've got time to kill anyway."
He took a deep breath before answering her question. "I'm sort of living with my aunt and cousins. My dad kicked me out of the house last week," he replied. "Said he couldn't stand the idea of having someone like me in his house any more."
