Penny smiled weakly, thinking that having a maid wasn't worth her life. Her life where she had to uphold perfection. She was slowly starting to crack, she could sense it. She wasn't sure how she was going to handle it. She was about to answer Cathrine's question when the earthshattering crash came. Her eyes widened and she glanced toward Cathrine. In a moment, she said, "Get away from the pieces. Just get away from them." She started going toward them and tried to put blend guilt with her shock.

Cathrine was busy putting the pieces on the table...she may be dumb sometimes, but she did know when something glass broke.. you picked up the pieces so others wouldn't step on them. She wasn't gonna thowr them in the trash...the vase was so nice and still looked pretty smashed into pieces...she couldn't thowr nice things away.
"Should I pick up the pieces so people won't step on 'em?" she asked Penny when she told her to get away from the pieces.

"Yeah, yeah, sure, but get away from them as fast as possible. I'll pick them up," Penny insisted, her mind whirring. She wasn't going to let Cathrine have to face the wrath of her parents. If anyone deserved it, it was Penny, not some innocent person who didn't realize what would happen if you made a mistake in this house. She knelt down at the pieces of glass, a sad look in her eyes.
"What was that noise?" Mr. Mezzello's voice called before he appeared in the living room. He caught sight of the broken glass right away and then toward Penny. "Did you do this?"
"Yes Father." The lie came easily. She was used to doing things like this anyway; why should they believe any differently? "I'm sorry."
"Sorry isn't enough. You're always doing things like this." Her father let out one of those sighs that tore into Penny. "What are we going to do about you? And stay away from those pieces! Do you want to get whatever dirt was left on your dress."
Blushing, she stood up slowly. "Yes Father," she murmured, folding her hands behind her back.

"Ok..." said Cathrine confused and stepped back from the pieces. Oh well...if she didn't want her to be a good guest...that was her problem.
She gulped as she heard a voice...oh great...it was probably Penny's dad and breaking a really expensive vase wasn't a very good first impression.
She opened her mouth to apologize, then was cut of by Penny saying she broke it. Why did she do that? She didn't break it.
She then felt a small pang of guilt as Mr. Mezzello talked to Penny...he seemed very dissapointed. Of course, her parents would be upset too if she had broken a really expensive vase...of course, they'd have enough sense to not put it somewhere where it could easily be broken. THis dissapointment seemed...diffrent. She couldn't discribe it.
"It is in a place where can easily be broken," she said, still deciding wheter she should tell the truth or not, "It is kinda right out there..."

Penny winced at Cathrine's words. Didn't she understand why Penny was doing this? "Cathrine, that's no excuse," she muttered, hoping that she would get the message.
"Well, you actually realize that. I never thought I'd see that day that you'd truly understand what you're expected to be," Mr. Mezzello responded, glancing down at Penny with disdain. "Little mistakes like this can't happen, do you understand me Penelope?"
"Yes father," Penny murmured, looking down at her Mary Janes.
"Very well...I'll call Gloria in the clean up this mess. Right now, I have to get back to work," he told her, giving her one last disappointed look before walking away.
Penny sighed. "That was close." She glanced back toward Cathrine, hoping they could just drop this.

"WHy not?" said Cathrine confused, "Why can't little mistakes happen?" she asked, confused. Really, Mr. Mezzelo was acting like this one mistake made Penny worthless.
"I.." said Cathrine confused, "I don't understand."

Penny's face fell at Cathrine's statement. Of course not. No one understood. No one understood how Penny could possibly have dealt with this for so long. Even she couldn't, not really. "Well...you can sort of see where my parents' priorities are. Perfection, perfection." Then Gloria walked in, giving Penny a pitying look before bending down. The maids were always kind to her. Perhaps that's why they got fired so quickly.

"Well," said Cathrine, "No one can be perfect all the time...he just seemed so dissapointed...I can't explain it..." she said..she knew what it was. He talked as if Penny was the greates dissapointment of his life. Was it always like that?
"Is it always like this?" she asked. Maybe he just had a bad day or something?

Penny really wished Cathrine could just drop the subject. It wasn't a big deal nor was it her business. Still, the chance to get this all out in the open seemed too big a temptation for her to keep her mouth shut. "Yeah...yeah, it's always like this."
She glanced toward Gloria, who looked up at Penny with another pitying look. "You going to be all right Pen?" she asked in her soft British accent as she picked up all the glass.
Penny sighed and nodded. She then drew her attention to one of the family photos. Somehow, the girl in that photo didn't look like her. Or at least not how she saw herself. That girl was solemn and quiet. She knew that was what her parents wanted, but Penny could never give that to them.

"Really?" said Cathrine, feeling a bit of symphaty for Penny that soon turned to guilt. She kinda just wanted to tell..Penny had to deal with this every day, she didn't. Or maybe she should just keep quiet.
"THat's horrible," she said. She wouldn't of been able to stand that, "I should tell the truth...." She felt so guilty...ugh...why wouldn't this feeling just leave? She hated it.

Penny's eyes widened when Cathrine suggested to tell the truth. "No! You can't. Listen to me...they'll blame me anyway. They'll say I shouldn't have let you in the house if this was going to happen." She felt tempted to grab onto Cathrine's shoulders, but decided against it. How could she possibly make this girl understand at all? She let out a sigh. "It doesn't matter anyway. You don't deserve to have to deal with them."

Cathrine rolled her eyes, "How can they blame you? I didn't know this would happen...you didn't know this would happen...it's all an accedient...I mean, I bet they make mistakes too..."
If they knew it was all a mistake, it wouldn't be that bad, right? Maybe, for some reason, Mr. Mezzelo thought Penny did this purposly.
"What's the wrose they can do?" she asked.

"Cathrine, don't you get it? It doesn't matter to them. I'm not supposed to make mistakes around here!" Penny explained, feeling desperate.
"That is true," Gloria explained as she walked back in with cheese and crackers. "They expect the world of her." She shook her head. "But don't tell them I said that. I need to keep this job."
Penny smiled gratefully toward Gloria and then looked toward Cathrine. "Now do you believe me?"

"Well," said Cathrine, "Everyone makes mistakes...don't they get that?"
Cathrine turned around as saw Gloria come back with cheese and crackers. "THey'd fire you for saying that?" she said...ok, she guessed someone wouldn't exagerate on something if they'd get fired for saying it.
"That's just..." she said...she just couldn't understand how parents wouldn't expect their kids not to make mistakes..it didn't make sense. "How can anyone's parent's act like that?"

Penny sighed and shrugged. "You think I know?" She glanced down at her Mary Janes again. God, how she loathed those shoes. They were representation for the life she was supposed to live, all because of what her parents wanted. They wanted her to be as shiny and "perfect" as those shoes. She felt like she was going to start crying, but she swallowed them away. Not here, not now.
