"Doesn't matter," Eric told her, "That's how everyone's going to see it. I know they will." He shrugged shaking his head. He knew what many people thought of him already, and this would only cement that in their minds; people like him couldn't change.
"She'll be home soon, probably," he told her, "So we won't have to wait long." Eric wanted desperately to hold Lilia, or at least to touch her. She always had a way of calming him when he was upset, but he didn't want to be pushed away again, so he stayed where he was.

Lilia shook her head. "That's not fair," she replied. "That isn't how it happened; people shouldn't believe things without proof."
Lilia just nodded, hoping he would be right. She just wanted it to be over as quickly as possible. She reached out and took Eric's hand, searching for some kind of comfort, praying that she hadn't already ruined everything.

Eric agreed completely with Lilia, but he knew there wouldn't be many others who would. He shrugged again. There was nothing he could do about the reactions. People were going to find out, and people were going to judge. He wished that Lilia would just go with the abortion. It would be so much easier for both of them. They could make sure she didn't get sick!
Eric looked down at Lilia's hand as she slipped it into his. The touch was soothing, but he made no move to get any closer to her. Not yet. Instead, he sat there, in silence, just thinking about what had happened.
The sound of the front door opening made him jump; he hadn't heard a car pull up. He turned his head to look at the door and saw his mother come in, laden with grocery bags. Standing quickly, he went to help her, hands shaking from nerves. They were really going to tell her...

Lilia took a deep breath when she heard the front door open. She let go of Eric's hand as he got up to help his mother with the groceries, but she didn't move. She wasn't sure what she should do; she wasn't sure how his mother was going to react to seeing her in the house. Not to mention how she would react to the news they were about to drop on her.

Laura smiled at her son as he came to help her with the groceries. "Thank you, Eric," she said, handing over the bags to him then hanging up her coat.
"No problem, mom," Eric said, managing to keep his voice calm. He cast a nervous glance at Lilia as he passed her, motioning with his head for her to follow him into the kitchen.
Following Eric, Laura noticed his girlfriend for the first time. "Oh!" she said, surprised to see her there, "Hello, Lilia. I wasn't expecting to see you here."

Lilia followed them into the kitchen and leaned against the counter. "Hi, Mrs. Cass," Lilia replied, smiling at the woman. She was beginning to feel sick as she stood there, but she knew that she had to come clean. "Eric and I were just talking about something," Lilia said, trying not to sound nervous. It wasn't an easy task, considering she felt as though she could be sick at any moment.

Laura looked between her son and Lilia curiously as she followed them into the kitchen. They were clearly nervous about something, and she wondered what it was.
"Mom," Eric said, not wanting the burden of telling his mother to have to fall on Lilia, "I... we... we have something we need to tell you," he glanced over at Lilia again, swallowing hard. "Lilia... uh... we... we're..." He couldn't manage to get the words out. He hadn't even said them at all since Lilia had first told him, and now, trying to say them to his mother, it was almost impossible.
Laura grew immediately serious. Eric was a smooth talker. He never stumbled over his words, and he was always confident. She knew something was wrong, and her eyes narrowed. She had her suspicions, but she hoped she was wrong. "Eric," she began, tone carrying a warning, "What did you do?"

Lilia felt her heart begin to race as Eric attempted to tell his mother what had happened. She couldn't look up at the woman's face as he spoke. It wasn't until she realized that he wasn't going to be able to get the words out that she spoke up. "We made a mistake," she whispered, still not looking up. "I'm pregnant."

Laura stared at Lilia for a long moment, the girl's words hanging in the air and ringing through her mind. She was so young! Too young to have a baby. And it was her son's fault. She whirled on Eric, face hard and jaw clenched. "Eric!" she exclaimed, "How could you do this to her? She's just a child! What's wrong with you! Don't you have any respect for her?"
Eric just shook his head, looking at his mother. She was so much smaller than him, yet she could so easily intimidate him, and right now he was feeling about as intimidated as he ever had in his life. "Mom," he began, voice cracking, "It was... we made a mistake, mom. We didn't mean for it to happen. And I do respect her! I love her! I never wanted to hurt her!"

Lilia shook her head. "It wasn't his fault. We're both responsible for this," she said. "It's not like he planned it. Things just got out of hand." She glared down at her feet, unable to look at Eric's mother. She didn't want him to take all of the blame for this; she had wanted it too, after all.

"That doesn't matter! He should know better!" Laura exclaimed, rounding on Lilia now. But her face softened as she looked at the girl. It saddened her to think of what she had gotten herself into, and while she was still angry at her son for being the one responsible, she felt no anger toward his girlfriend. Sighing, she addressed them both. "What are you going to do?"
Eric knew what he wanted to do, but if that had been an option, they wouldn't even be having this conversation with his mother. He knew how angry she was with him, but was glad she wasn't taking it out on Lilia. He'd certainly be hearing from her later, though, he knew.
"We're going to keep it, mom," he said quietly.

Lilia winced at Eric's mother yelling at her. She was relieved when the woman seemed to calm down a bit, but she was still afraid of what might happen when they told her that they were going to keep the baby. She was about to open her mouth when Eric jumped in with the answer. At least he seemed as though he was on board with the idea now. "I'm not changing my mind on that," Lilia added. She braced herself, unsure of how Eric's mother would respond to the news.

Laura just looked at them both, still having difficulty accepting what they had told her. She was proud of Lilia for making the decision to keep the baby, but wondered if she really knew what she was getting herself into. "Lilia, do you know how this is going to affect you? It's not going to be easy. I'm not trying to get you to change your mind, but you have to know what you've gotten yourselves into. Are you ready for that responsibility?"

Lilia sighed and looked up at Eric's mother. "I don't really have much choice. I know it isn't going to be easy, but what else am I supposed to do? I got myself into this mess. Now I have to deal with the consequences," Lilia replied. She quietly crossed her arms over her chest.

Eric moved back to stand beside Lilia, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. He was proud of how strong she was being, and only wished he could be the same way. "The decision has been made, Mom," he told her, hoping he sounded firm in his stance.
Laura just shook her head. She loved her son dearly, but wasn't sure he had it in him to be a father at this point in his life. But she could see that the two were standing by their choices, and sighed, looking to Lilia once more. "Have you made a doctor's appointment?"
