"Nah, I wouldn't. That would just be a huge pain in my side that I'd rather not deal with," Lilly told him honestly, although she did roll her eyes at his smile. "So I admitted it. What are you going to do about it?" Her smile matched his for a moment. They had fun.
At this comment, she raised both her eyebrows. "Are you honestly telling me you forgot homecoming?" Her hands found her waist and her stance became a little more 'no kisses for you, silly boy!' than romantic. "So yes, I am telling you that you've seen me in a dress. You are too much, really." At this, she swatted his arm.
"And no problem. Plus, I wouldn't want to take you. You probably have no taste in shoes anyway," Lilly added flippantly, brushing a stray curl back into place. She nudged his feet with the edge of her ballet flat.

Dwayne chuckled lightly. Yes, they were definitely enjoying this conversation. Who cared if it got so silly that people stared at them for acting like children? He shrugged. "Eh, I don't know. Just felt like acknowledging you admitted it." He winked, knowing that he was probably sounding quite obnoxious by now. At least they were having fun.
Needless to say, Dwayne found himself quite embarrassed when she reminded him of her Homecoming dress. He opened his mouth, but closed it, realizing he wasn't sure what he could say to excuse himself from that. "I...okay, you have every right to be mad at me for that one." Actually, he was wondering if getting a swat on the arm was enough.
Dwayne raised an eyebrow at her response on the shoe subject. "Okay, now that's just mean, even if it is probably true. What would I know about shoes?" He chuckled lightly before he heard wheels rolling on the concrete. "Aha, it's finally decided to show up," he commented, turning toward the hayride and stepping aside to let a few of their classmates get off.

Lilly threw her head back and giggled. She couldn't believe that two months had gone by already. They'd just...flown, it seemed. They were a good pair. Along with being her boyfriend, he was also her best friend, and she had no qualms about being herself (read being a little off-the-wall) around him. "Oh, fine. Be that way." She stuck out her tongue at Dwayne, daring him to make a move.
Lilly pursed her lips and cocked her hip, resting her hand on her side. "That's what I thought. I do have every right. All you probably remember from that night was the ride home." She smirked. She nearly forgot the dress herself after that little...escapade.
"You would know absolutely nothing about shoes," Lilly admonished, bending her toes. She looked up as well and saw the ride get there. Not only did she notice the cart, but she also noticed how dark it was getting. "Jeez, what time is it?" Holding up her wrist to check her delicate, old-fashioned watch, she had to nearly press the watch to her face to see the time. "It's nine already."

Dwayne laughed as she stuck her tongue out at him. Again, they were acting like a couple of little kids and Dwayne truly wouldn't have had it any other way. They just felt absolutely comfortable with each other and let themselves be whoever they were around each other. He squeezed her hand, a wide, loving smile on his face. He wondered if she knew how much he cared about her yet, if he had dropped enough hints by now. He knew he was going to wind up telling her he loved her really soon. It just had to be the right moment.
Dwayne smiled apologetically. "To be fair, I actually do. I remember quite a bit of that night actually. Just not what you wore. Hey, I hardly remember what I wore. Not that it's an excuse," he remarked, glad that she was smirking at least. It was always a good sign if one or both of them had that expression on their faces. "But I'll admit that the ride home came close to blocking it all out for quite some time."
Dwayne raised an eyebrow when Lilly let him know the time. "Seriously? Wow." Once the crowd cleared up, it was more clear than ever that they basically had the entire hayride to themselves. Somehow that idea made him smile. Alone time with Lilly was always good. "Shall we go on then?"

Dwayne smiled, and Lilly couldn't help but to smile back. Even just standing around doing close to nothing they figured out a way to have a good time. She squeezed his hand as well and raised up on her toes again to kiss him. Somehow kissing him fell a million times short of kisses in the movies.
Lilly rolled her eyes as he tried to apologize. "Uh huh, uh huh. Whatever. I remember exactly what you were wearing, mostly because it looked delicious and I wanted to give it to myself for my birthday and just hang it in my closet. Or whatever, you know." That sounded weirder out loud than it had in her head. "I'm sure it would," she added, winking.
As the hay ride emptied out, Lilly was even more anxious to get on. "Of course we should go on! What would be the point of just standing around in uncomfortable shoes if we were just...not going to get on?" With a moment of struggle, Lilly had pulled herself by her arms up onto the truck bed and slid off her shoes with a contented sigh. "I feel better now."

Dwayne gladly returned the kiss, placing his hands on the sides of her face. There were very few things Dwayne would rather have been doing than this. Anything involving Lilly was at the top of things he loved to do, really. That was expected of course, but it was still nice to remind himself that. He pulled away slowly and looked into her eyes for a moment. A small smile went on his face.
Dwayne chuckled at her response, definitey getting the feeling she wasn't too mad at him. "Thanks. I do remember that you looked gorgeous, although that's sort of a given when it comes to you." He stroked her cheek with his thumb for a bit. "My guess is we're on the same page on that point?"
Dwayne held in a laugh at Lilly's eagerness to go on the hayride. "Wow, I didn't realize you were looking forward to this so much." After she settled herself in, Dwayne climbed into it as well, with much less difficulty than her considering that his shoes weren't killing him. Sitting down next to her, some of the hay brushing against his arms, he remarked, "Good. Wouldn't want you to be uncomfortable."

Lilly sighed gently, and it was a happy sound. Her cheeks turned a little pink but she smiled anyway. "In front of everyone?" she managed, but was obviously not too troubled about it. Lately, she'd wanted to be slightly more private about what they had, if only because she wanted to keep it for herself and herself only. No sharing.
Lilly rolled her eyes. "Okay, enough with the flattery," she ordered. "Unlike you, I don't need it to keep my heart pumping." Laughing anyway, she played with the hair on the back of his neck. "Of course."
Leaning back into the bales of hay, Lilly shrugged. "Hey, I'm not so much as looking forward to the ride as I'm looking forward to relaxing for a bit. It's nice that the school did a carnival this year. I can't believe they brought in rides," she said, taking some hay inbetween her fingers and twisting it around.

Dwayne held in a smirk when he noticed that she was blushing. He still had that effect on her and somehow that made him even more excited for this whole thing. "Do you mind?" he asked, knowing full well that her voice already answered his question. He was quite happy with that as well. He hardly realized that anyone else was around when she was there, if they were there at all.
Dwayne rolled his eyes in response to Lilly's statement. "Hey, I don't need flattery. I just receive it much better than most people," he told her, squeezing her hands. "My heart pumps enough when you're around anyway."
Dwayne nodded understandingly to her explanation. "Yep, relaxation is always good." He took her hand (the one that wasn't playing with some of the hay of course) and smiled widely at her. "It is pretty cool, isn't it?" He glanced over his shoulder as the ride began, his eyes landing on one of the roller coasters. He then looked back at Lilly. "So it's safe to say that we'll definitely remember how much fun we had tonight."

"Only a little," Lilly answered weakly, the blush still evident on her face. Was it really fair of her to be that way? It wasn't like she minded that much...only a little. Like she'd said. She rolled her eyes when he attempted the flattery subject again. "That is enough!" she admonished, giggling. "I don't receive flattery as well as you do!" That much had been confirmed many times.
Lilly took his hand without looking back at him, pressing their palms together and lacing their fingers. "Yeah," she said softly, not really paying attention to much other than the hay in her fingers. She couldn't help but shake the feeling that something was going to happen...good or bad, she wasn't sure. But the impending feeling was definitely...impending.

Dwayne tilted his head. He actually hadn't expected that answer. "You really do?" he asked, his eyes narrowing. He didn't exactly want to do anything that she didn't want. "Is there a reason or do you just mind a little for no good reason?"
He laughed at her response to bringing up the flattery subject again. "Okay, okay, I'll stop!" he announced, now laughing quite a bit. He squeezed her hands a bit more tightly (not enough to cut off circulation). "We can change the subject, I promise." He winked.
Dwayne stroked her hand with his thumb and kissed her on the top of her head.

"Well...it's just...private, you know? Just you and me," Lilly mumbled, somewhat ashamed for saying anything in the first place. "I wouldn't mind that for no good reason." She shrugged and went back to fiddling with the straw. She liked how it felt between her fingers...sort of raw and smooth at the same time. It was hard to explain.
She laughed a little as well and leaned against his side. "Thank you. You know, not that I mind terribly or anything, just...thanks, anyway." Lilly glanced down as she felt his thumb on her hand. He was strong, but she still felt utterly at ease.

Dwayne nodded, suddenly feeling slightly ashamed. Right; they were together, but some privacy was usually the better way to go. "Yeah, I guess you're right there." He winced before glancing back at her. "I'm sorry. I should've realized that sooner." He leaned back against of one of the bales of hay.
He wrapped an arm around Lilly's waist as she leaned against him. He could already tell this was going to be one of their best dates. He just knew it was going to special. The anticipation of why it would be was probably going to kill him, so he decided to keep distracting himself. Not exactly hard around Lilly. "You're welcome."

"It's okay," Lilly murmured, busying herself by playing with his hair. The sky got darker still and the stars began to poke their heads out of the clouds. "Ah," she whispered. "Pretty." Realizing that he'd said something, she glanced back at him. "It's fine, really. Not a big deal."
Lilly exhaled slowly, moving her head to settle under his chin. This was the least scary Halloween she'd ever had, and she was absolutely fine with it. "I forgot," she mumbled, "what did I thank you for in the first place?"

Dwayne smiled as he felt her fingers in his hair. It was much more gentle than usual and somehow the sensation was even better. He sighed softly before kissing her on the cheek. He was very glad that it wasn't such a big deal. Nothing really seemed like a big deal, except their relationship of course, at the present time. He followed her gaze up to the stars and let out a soft sigh. "Very..." he agreed and not just about the stars.
The words that he had been wanting to say for nearly all of these two months seemed to be even more energetic than usual tonight. They were dancing around his head and screaming for him to say them already. It felt like today was the day he was going to.
He took a deep breath so he could make sure that he was thinking clearly before she asked him what she was thanking him for. "For changing the subject on me and flattery," he responded, glad to get it off his mind for a minute. He needed to find the exact right time...make this whole thing, saying those three words, special. Lilly deserved it. She deserved whatever he could give her.

Lilly shifted herself that she was sitting in his lap and facing him. It was hard for her to believe that they'd gotten this ride all to themselves. Probably it was just because it was getting late. People were going home, or busying themselves with other things. Somehow, though, this was entirely enough.
She nodded slowly as he answered her. Mumbling, "Ah, I get it," Lilly moved her head to rest on his chest. It was nice and quiet for at least a few moments. All she could hear were the sounds of his heart and his breathing, and for some reason that was all that she needed to hear.
