Dwayne was pleasantly caught off guard as Lilly changed her position. As usual, he felt absolutely comfortable. He internally thanked his lucky stars that they had the hayride to themselves, even if it was only because it had gotten so late. Actually, the fact that they were on so late was amazing in of itself. It was like the stars just made this whole situation better, made the fact that he was with Lilly all the more beautiful.
He smiled gently as she rested her head against his chest. Slowly, he stroked the soft strands of her blonde hair. There weren't enough words in the English language to describe the joy that was swelling inside of him. He kissed the top of her head, hoping that even a small trace of what he was feeling was shared with Lilly.

Lilly knew her parents thought that this was nothing. But for some reason, she knew it wasn't. Knew it wasn't going to be just nothing. Something more, maybe? Who knew. She sighed weakly and kissed his neck, as that was all she could reach at the moment.
Lilly giggled quietly when he played with her hair. It was such a normal gesture, but it still made her smile. "So..." she prompted, leaning back to look at the sky.

Dwayne closed his eyes as she kissed him, letting contentment wash all over him. For a moment, he tried to remember if he ever felt this happy, this complete before meeting Lilly. It was a total blank. Somehow that made this feel even more special. As she leaned back, he followed her gaze up for a brief moment.
"You realize how perfect this is?" he suddenly whispered after her prompt, just loud enough for her to hear. She seemed to like it when he talked that way. He glanced back down to get a good look at her. "It's just...I don't know if I can even do it justice by explaining." It was so hard to think of the right words right then, so he sort of hoped his expression said it all.

"Hmm?" Lilly asked after hearing his voice. She looked up briefly, just long enough to catch his eye. "Not perfect for Halloween, really...not tricks and treats. It's more like...umm.." She bit her lip as she thought, and idly pulled some straw out of her hair. "Like date night, really." Laughing, she sat back up and looked at him.
He had a sort of funny look on his face, one she didn't quite recognize as having seen before. Lilly propped her elbows up on her knees and studied his face. "What are you thinking about? And be specific," she murmured, hoping he'd solve the mystery for her.

Dwayne nodded at her response. "Yeah, it is, which is exactly what I meant." He squeezed her hands. "It's not exactly what you'd think would happen on Halloween, but it works quite nicely, doesn't it?" He chuckled as she began laughing. It was just contagious whenever she laughed.
At her question, he let out a sigh. How was he going to put into words what he wanted to say? "Mainly you." He paused momentarily to place a hand on her face before continuing. "Lilly, you've made the past two months amazing, you know that?" He bit his lip, thinking that this all sounded way too sentimental and cheesy, but she did ask for specifics.

Lilly crawled back into his lap, letting her legs fall to either side of his. "I guess it does," she answered, smiling as she played with the hair at the back of his neck. Sometimes he worded things in a silly way, or thought differently about things that she wouldn't have even considered. It was nice, really.
"Hmm...have I really?" Lilly asked, and her voice sounded almost mock-questioning. However, she was every little bit sincere (even if she tried to hide it by joking around). "So that's really what's on your mind?" Her bare heel brushed against his leg as she shifted, and she shivered- but not from the cold.

Dwayne nodded. As usual, his smile never left his face. There was no possible reason why it would, honestly. It seemed like everything she did gave him a reason to smile. For example, her being this close to him, where they were all alone under a beautiful night sky.
Dwayne smirked lightly at her tone. Even if he didn't know that she was serious, he wouldn't have minded how she made it sound like a joke. Always without fail, she made him laugh. She made him feel like the happiest guy in the world. "Yes, you have." He wrapped his arms around her shoulders and kissed her lightly.
At her question, he nodded. "Yeah...although there's a little bit more." His eyes met hers again and his heart jumped. He knew he had to tell her now or he was going to explode. "A little bit more that I have to tell you..." he added, his voice becoming softer. Just sitting there, she was taking his breath away, although what he was doing probably had a lot to do with it.
Oddly enough, he wasn't afraid of scaring her away anymore. He wasn't even scared of the possibility of her not sharing his feelings. He didn't assume what her reaction would be. He just didn't find himself the least bit scared. So inched closer and whispered in her ear, "Lilly? I love you."

The words were like a shock to her system, although her body didn't necessarily register that at first. She just sat there, as she had, struck a little dumb. As long as it wasn't some stupid Halloween trick, she'd be fine with it. More than fine, actually. More ecstatic than anything. But his tone, and his voice, and his breath on her ear made it seem more sincere than she could ever believe it to be. "Oh?" was all she could manage at first- although it was still very uneven and full of every emotion she just happened to be feeling.
With shaking hands, Lilly slid his glasses off the end of his nose again and tossed them into the pillow of hay beside them. She closed the distance between them, kissing him as fully as she could manage without falling off the side of the hayride cart, and after a moment was able to whisper the same thing back.

Dwayne watched her anxiously, gauging her reaction. She seemed just as surprised as someone would expect her to be. He just wished she would say something to ensure that he had actually said it and wasn't dreaming. Finally, a single, shaky syllable left her lips. A smile broadened on his face and he nodded.
It all happened quite quickly after that and before Dwayne knew it, his glasses were off and Lilly was kissing him. He smiled against her lips as he returned it, realizing what this most likely meant. He was proven correct when she repeated his words. Holding her closer, Dwayne kissed her again. "God, you don't know how long I've waited to say that," he murmured.

"Probably just as long as I have," Lilly mumbled between kisses. It was true- it had been ages, practically. At least over a month. But now it just couldn't be said enough. Not even close. "Love you," she whispered, pressing his fingers to her lips.
It had happened. And it was easy- all that needed to happen was for one of them to say it. Lilly realized, midway through another kiss, that she didn't really care what her parents thought, or her brother, or her friends, or anybody standing around that just happened to catch sight of them. It was just him and her, and right now, that was all that mattered.

Dwayne smiled up at her. He had hoped that she felt the same way. More than hoped, really. Now here it was and it was safe to say that nothing was ever going to bring him down that night. Now that it had been said, he needed to say it again, so he was glad when Lilly said it. "I love you too Lilly." He held her closer, kissing her harder this time.

Lilly hardly had time to smile as he kissed her back, and it was different than she recognized. Looser, sort of, but needier, and better- that was for sure. She scooted backwards a little bit without breaking from him and leaned back into a nearby bale of hay. Even if there was no candy, trick-or-treat, or being scared out of her mind, this was definitely going on her list of best Halloweens ever.

Dwayne had to break away from Lilly to get a few breaths of oxygen in. Somehow, that seemed like a second thought, particularly as he looked at Lilly. This was becoming the best night of his life and it was all because of the amazing, intelligent, beautiful girl that was right in front of him. Somehow the silence said it all in that brief moment. There was no way that Dwayne was going to let Lilly go anytime soon.

As they split, Lilly took in a few gaspfuls of air that she didn't know she needed. She grinned at him for a moment, and it was a sort of lopsided not-quite-shy-but-not-quite-brave sort of smile. After taking a second to decide the best course of action, she pulled him to her by his tie, again closing their short amount of distance. Time not spent making him happy was time badly spent. Even though her logic may have been a little bit twisted, she believed it through and through.

Dwayne had to chuckle slightly when she smiled. He wasn't even sure why. This whole situation was anything but funny. Maybe it was a way for all of the joy and adoration he felt to get out, because there just didn't seem to be any words that would be sufficient for it. As she pulled him closer, he looked into her eyes before kissing her.
