Dwayne knew this was coming and had prepared himself for what he would say when she asked. Letting out a sigh, he began his explanation. "Because I was worried that I'd scare you away...I mean, it was so soon..." he whispered, his expression seeming to show just how ashamed he was for keeping that from him. "I fell for you fast Lilly. It wasn't that I was afraid to show my feelings...more that pushing you would be the last thing I'd ever want to do."
Smirking at her response to both questions, he sat back up. "Well...when you think of anything, let me know, all right?" he said, still in a hushed voice and still with a smile on his face. He wasn't at all annoyed by her not knowing what love was if that was what she felt, nor over her not telling him what was bothering her. He'd be patient with her, because she meant everything to him. It was so odd thinking that after two months, let alone the two days after figuring this all out. But it was true, he knew that.

Lilly's entire body warmed with his explanation. Somebody loved her. It was like those chain emails she always got from her cousin- "Pass this on to twenty-four of your friends to let them know they are loved. Remember, there is always someone who loves you." She actually believed it now, when a few months back she thought the message was totally bogus. "Really," she answered softly, not sure of what else to say.
Lilly rolled her eyes at his smirk as it regained its familiar place back on his face. "Oh, you stop. You know what you're doing to me, and I don't think it's fair at all. " But she liked it, regardless of how fair or unfair it was. She turned her head to face him and kissed him gently. "It's not fair and you know it," she added, her voice as quiet as his.

Dwayne beamed when he could see that she accepted his answer. He had to admit, he was the slightest bit worried that she would be upset by the fact that he kept something this huge from her. He nodded in response to what probably wasn't a question and laced their fingers. Now he was positive he would never be able to hide anything from her, not that he ever wanted to. Everything seemed out in the open anyway and it was the strongest sense of completeness he could remember.
At her latest response, he raised an eyebrow, laughing a bit. "Oh, I'm supposed to know that?" he teased. Truth was, he had a pretty good idea what he was doing. Sometimes he just did that to see Lilly's reaction. It wasn't at all nice, but it was always funny. Although her kiss was anything but. At the very least, she wasn't really angry. That would have been horrible after all of this.
After pulling away, Dwayne whispered, "Okay, you're right. It's not fair." He wasn't even trying to think of anything witty to say. He was too lost in her to do so. Everything he was saying was as sincere as he could get. "But you must know the effect you have on me, and therefore, you're not being fair either." Still he smiled. He loved her for that and everything else she did and was.

Lilly didn't smile as wide as he did (she was afraid it may hurt her face to do so) but she took his hand nonetheless. Even though she had other places to be- she really, really wanted to see what Angel had come dressed as- she couldn't help but feel perfectly comfortable here. In fact, it was hard for her to remember why she had to leave the hayride truck in the first place. Or why she at all wanted to.
In Lilly's mind, he was supposed to know. And he probably did, and just did that to yank her chain. Truthfully, it bothered her sometimes. But usually, it just made him all the more infuriatingly cute. And on her part, sure, once in a while she did act flirty just to see the look on his face. Sort of like she was now. "Maybe I'm not being fair. But maybe being fair doesn't matter. Not now, anyway," she murmured as she rolled the thought around in her head. "Maybe I don't want to be fair."

Dwayne was about to respond when the hayride suddenly slowed to a stop. He internally groaned before reasoning that just because the ride was over didn't mean that the night wasn't still young. They still had some date time left. It didn't have to be over. With that, he let out a sigh of relief before reaching for the glasses that had been left on the hay. He wasn't sure why, but he didn't really want to lose them. A keepsake, he supposed. After all, he was stupid and forgot his camera for the first time in seven years. Then again, maybe it was for the best. Not letting that thing get in the way of what was really happening.
Taking her hand to help her off the ride, he responded, "Well, good. Because I don't think I want to be fair either," with a wry smile. Carefully coming down from it, he looked back at her. She never looked more beautiful.

Lilly felt the truck slow and realized it was probably time to put her shoes back on. She disentangled herself from Dwayne for a moment to find the pink ballet flats in the hay and to slide them back on her feet. It had now become abundantly clear in her head that she just had to go see Angel and probably Collins, even if she had to drag Dwayne along with her. She wasn't usually a big fan of surprises, and this one made her more anxious than ever. What if he'd done something really wild?
Lilly grinned as she took his hand and hopped off the back of the truck. Right thing to say, she thought when he answered her comment. Of course it was the right thing to say, though; he never failed her in that department. He seemed to pause and look at her for a moment, and Lilly was confused. "What?" she asked, tilting her head up to see him better.

Dwayne raised an eyebrow when he noticed a sort of anxious look in Lilly's eyes. It was actually very similar to his expression when he caught a look at himself in the mirror before coming here. He had a feeling that this was going to happen and he wanted to get there as soon as possible to see if he was right. He doubted that was the reason, so he commented, "You seem anxious to get somewhere. Any particular reason why?"
Dwayne couldn't help but grin when she hopped off. That was so like her. Climbing out wasn't an option; it'd be too boring for her. He pulled her to his side as she addressed him. Realizing that he had been staring, Dwayne's grin became slightly sheepish. Not that it wasn't the natural thing to do, especially with her for a girlfriend. "You've just never looked more beautiful..." he responded. It came out so simply, but everything in his expression would let someone know he was being sincere.

"Oh, yeah, a little bit," Lilly said, thinking of Angel's possible costumes. The mental list was endless, and all possibilities were great. "Just...a friend of mine's been keeping his costume a surprise and I really want to go see it soon. Do you mind? You can come too, if you want." She was itching to see what it was. She really didn't like this one, as far as surprises went. She didn't want to wait!
Lilly looked a little happily quizzical when he grinned- he was on air tonight, he seemed, and every little thing made him smile. Not that she minded at all, seeing as it was probably because of her. Okay, she'd quit the humble act- it was because of her, and she was ecstatic. "What?" Lilly repeated, before hearing his answer. Her heart skipped about seven beats and she glanced down at the tips of her shiny pink shoes, cheeks warming. "Thanks," she answered quietly, not knowing what else to say.

Dwayne nodded as he listened to Lilly's explanation, completely knowing where she was coming from. When it came to curiosity being fulfilled, Dwayne was hardly patient, so Lilly's reaction to needing to know her friend's costume wasn't too far from something he'd do. "No, I don't mind at all. The last thing I want is for you to be kept waiting." He smirked lightly before asking, "Is it anyone I know?" Now her curiosity was rubbing onto him, which was hardly surprising.
It was pretty clear that nothing was going to get that smile off of Dwayne's face tonight. He didn't remember feeling this happy in a while and considering that he was a generally happy person, that was saying a lot. All because of the girl standing beside him. He wrapped a gentle arm around her waist before kissing her on the top of her head.

"You met him once. Angel? At lunch. He's told us that he's got this really special costume that he's been planning for ages, but he won't tell me what it is, and it's driving me crazy." Hopefully Dwayne'd be open-minded enough for whatever crazy thing that Angel decided to pull off tonight. Lilly figured it'd probably be fantastic, seeing as he wouldn't give them any details.
She wasn't embarassed, but Lilly kept her eyes trained to the ground anyway. If she looked up, she thought that maybe he wouldn't be there or something similar. With an effort, she lifted her chin to look at him (he was still there, lucky her) and rested a hand on his chest. "Maybe we should go," she whispered, only barely holding herself together.

"Oh right, I remember him. And I also remember how he and Tommy were acting like they didn't have a care in the world," he responded, a small smile tracing his lips at the thought. He admired those brave enough to be not hide their sexuality, especially in this school where homophobia was the main plague. The more people that were out, the less ammunition the bigots had, at least that was the way Dwayne saw it. Most people like that were really just big cowards.
Dwayne noticed how Lilly's eyes seemed to be firmly on the ground and he had to wonder why on earth that would be. From where he was, her cheeks didn't seem pink, so that probably wasn't the reason. Then she finally glanced up and Dwayne could breathe easy, knowing that it probably wasn't something that was upsetting her. "Yeah, probably..." he responded, his eyes not leaving hers.

"Yeah. They're really brave. I mean, it's hard enough to have people talking about you when you're not..." Lilly trailed off. "But that's gotta be tough." She really supported them- Angel used to be really shy, and for him just to do this, just to be with who he wanted to, shouldn't have taken this much effort. Angel and Collins (and anybody else in the school who was in their boat) deserved a lot more respect than they got.
Lilly just stood there for a minute. His eyes seemed to burn into hers and she could feel it in the pit of her stomach. She wanted to make a move...kiss him, jump into his arms, pull him behind a tree, anything...but she knew she couldn't, or else she'd miss every other thing she had to do that night. "No, I mean we really should get going," she repeated, still glued to her spot.

"I'll say...even when it shouldn't be, it's hard for them," he remarked, trying hard to not have a hint of annoyance in his voice. People just had to be so damn closed minded. The first sign of something they disagreed with, they tried to make those people's lives a living hell. "So they both deserve a pat on the back."
Dwayne blinked, her words fully processing. "Right...let's go...I would've moved, but I'm not entirely sure where to find Angel. That and I was distracted," he explained with a weak smile. Squeezing the hand he was holding, he motioned ahead of them. "Lead the way."
